Senior Defender Picked in Fourth Round by Reigning MLS Champs
NORTHRIDGE, CA ---
Senior defender Trevor Morley (San Diego, CA) was selected in the fourth round, 81st overall, by the Portland Timbers in the Major League Soccer (MLS) 2016 Superdraft Tuesday morning. The 2015 Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Morley will join the reigning MLS Cup Champions as he purses his professional soccer career.Â
"The CSUN men's soccer staff and I are extremely proud of Trevor for seeing his dreams come true today," CSUN head coach Terry Davila said. "Since stepping foot on campus, Trevor has worked tirelessly in the classroom and on the pitch and represented CSUN and his teammates with distinction, pride and commitment. We look forward to watching his professional soccer career unfold."Â
Morley is a 6-2 center back who started all 19 matches for CSUN in the 2015 season. He served as an anchor for the Matadors' defense, standing as the team's captain and earning Second Team NSCAA All-Far West Region and First Team All-Big West honors. He became the first Matador since Sean Franklin (2005-07) to earn First Team All-Big West honors for three-straight seasons. Morley was the fourth Matador to earn the conference's top defensive award and the first CSUN winner since Joe Franco in 2012.Â
"I am excited for this great opportunity and there is still a lot of work to be done," Morley said. "It is definitely satisfying to to see years of hard work pay off and it is a dream come true. Going to an organization with the stature of Portland and being something they want or value is great. It is also somewhat daunting because I have to prove myself from the start. I want to thank all the coaches, staff and my former teammates for helping me reach this point and achieve my dream."Â
Morley totaled a career-high four goals and one assist on the season. All four goals came from the penalty spot and were the first four of his career. Morley also earned NSCAA Third Team All-Far West Region honors in 2013 and was the first CSUN defender to earn multiple All-Region honors since Franklin in 2005 and 2006. In his four seasons on the pitch, he helped the Matadors post 27 shutouts.Â
With the selection, CSUN has now had five players selected in the MLS Superdraft since the 2012 season. Morley joins former Matadors Rafael Garcia (LA Galaxy, 2012), Joe Franco (LA Galaxy, 2013), Sagi Lev-Ari (Columbus Crew, 2015) and Edwin Rivas (Toronto FC, 2015) as recent Matadors selected in the top American professional league. Morley becomes the 14th player under Davila to be selected in the MLS Superdraft and the 15th Matador overall.Â
He will have some familiar company in Portland as the Timbers selected Cal Poly goalkeeper Wade Hamilton in the third round of Tuesday's draft. Morley's teammate Adam Hobbs has signed a professional contract with FSVÂ Optik Rathenow in Germany.Â
