Freshman Averages 20.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in Two Games
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- CSUN women's basketball freshman center Channon Fluker was named the Big West Conference Player of the Week for a pair of standout performances last week in league play, the conference office announced Monday. In an overtime loss at Cal Poly, Fluker posted her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Two days, later she recorded a career-high 31 points and 11 field goals to go with 11 rebounds as CSUN defeated Hawai'i to snap a seven-game losing streak and won its first Big West game of the season.Â
"It was a surprise to receive the award and I want to thank my teammates for continuously pushing me in practice and for fighting to the end in each game." Fluker said. "Getting that victory Saturday was big and combined with this award, it just really motivates me to work that much harder in practice and in games for the rest of the season."Â
Since the turn of the calendar year, Fluker has really ramped up her production and last week's results were a product of that improvement. In six games in 2016, Fluker is averagng 14.2 points and 10.3 rebounds per game while shooting 51 percent from the field. Last week, she averaged 20.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game while shooting 56 percent from the field and 76.5 percent from the free throw line.Â
At Cal Poly on Jan. 21, Fluker overcame early foul trouble to finish with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Matadors nearly scored a victory in San Luis Obispo, but the Mustangs escaped with a victory in overtime. Fluker was 3-for-8 from the field and 4-of-6 from the free throw line and half of her rebounds came on the offensive glass.Â
Two days later, Fluker put together her best performance of the season to help CSUN snap a seven-game losing streak and post its third-straight win at home against the Rainbow Wahine. She finished 11-of-17 from the field and 9-of-11 from the free throw line to set new career highs in points, field goals and free throws. She added 11 rebounds, including five more on the offensive glass, and did it all in 26 minutes of action.Â
"I am proud of Channon and our entire team for putting in the effort required to get positive results," CSUN head coach Jason Flowers said. "Channon has grown tremendously in a short amount of time and we expect her to continue to work to improve."Â
For the season, Fluker is averaging 8.6 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. She ranks sixth in the conference in rebounding while her 31 points are tied for the fourth-most by a Big West player this season and her nine free throws are tied for second. In conference play, she is averaging a team-high 13.0 points and 9.6 rebounds per game.Â
Fluker is the first Matador to receive the award in the 2015-16 season. She and her teammates return to the court on Thursday, Jan. 28 with a 7 p.m. contest at UC Irvine.Â
