The CSUN women's basketball team (3-16, 1-4 Big West Conference) plays a pair of pivotal Big West Conference games this week as it meets up with its league rivals from Orange County. On Thursday, Jan. 28, the Matadors face the UC Irvine Anteaters in a 7 p.m. contest at the Bren Events Center. Ghizal Hasan will be calling the action on the CSUN Sports Network and the game will also be featured on BigWest.TV with links at GoMatadors.com. Two days later, CSUN hosts Cal State Fullerton in a 4 p.m. contest at The Matadome. Mark Roberts will be on the call on the CSUN Sports Network and will be featured on BigWest.TV. Last week, the Matadors played some of their best basketball of the season and nearly came away with a 2-0 record. At Cal Poly, Katelin King hit a big 3-pointer with less than a minute to play to put CSUN ahead. However, the Mustangs connected on one of their own right before the final buzzer and prevailed in overtime. Serafina Maulupe led the Matadors with 16 points while Emily Cole had 12 and Channon Fluker posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.Â
Two days later, things would finally come together for CSUN in a 63-60 victory over Hawai'i. Fluker posted a career-high 31 points and 11 field goals to go with 11 rebounds as the Matadors snapped an eight-game losing streak. For her efforts, Fluker was named Big West Conference Player of the Week.Â
This week brings a pair of important tests for the Matadors in the forms of the Anteaters and Titans. UCI defeated Cal State Fullerton 62-58 on Jan. 23 to give it some separation in the standings. Cal State Fullerton is 0-5 in Big West play but features several of the top rookies in the league in Michelle Berry, Dani Craig and Jade Vega. The Titans play at Hawai'i on Thursday night before coming to the San Fernando Valley.Â
