CSUN Falls to UC Davis in Big West Opener

Sophomore Tessa Boagni Scores Game-High 20 Points in Defeat
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (2-13, 0-1 Big West) lost 75-52 to UC Davis Thursday night in both teams' 2016 Big West Conference opener at The Matadome. Sophomore Tessa Boagni scored a game-high 20 points, finishing 8-of-13 from the field with a career-high two 3-pointers, but the Aggies used a strong start to hand the Matadors a loss on the league campaign's opening night.Â
The Matadors suffered from a slow start that put them behind the scoreboard. UC Davis jumped out to a 9-0 advantage and led 24-8 after the first period. CSUN finished 3-of-10 from the field with eight turnovers in the frame.Â
In the second period, CSUN fought back to get to within 27-17 after a lay-up from Nautica Morrow with 5:47 left in the half. From there, the Aggies closed the half on a 10-2 run to take a 37-19 lead into halftime. Channon Fluker had five points and four rebounds at the break for the Matadors.Â
The third period saw the Aggies not allow CSUN to get closer than 15 points and another run at the end of the frame saw their lead extend to 61-38 after 30 minutes of action. Both teams scored 14 in the fourth period.Â
UC Davis finished with 44 points in the paint compared to 28 for the Matadors. The Aggies also converted 15 CSUN turnovers into 20 points and scored 12 points on the fast break.Â
Boagni finished with 16 of her 20 points in the second half on 7-for-11 shooting from the field. She added three rebounds and one block and one steal in 27 minutes. For the season, she is averaging a team-high 12.4 points per game on 48.5 percent shooting.Â
Fluker posted her second-straight game in double-figures, recording 12 points and eight rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench. She added an assist and a block and is averaging team-high 6.6 rebounds per game.Â
Fellow freshman Cheyenne Allen scored 10 points off the bench, her second game in double-figures this season. She was 4-of-7 from the field and added two rebounds and an assist in 23 minutes.Â
Serafina Maulupe led CSUN with four assists and added four rebounds and three steals in 23 minutes. Katelin King scored six points and had three rebounds in 27 minutes.Â
As a team, CSUN shot 38.5 percent (20-of-52) from the field and 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from 3-point range. UC Davis finished at 54.5 percent (30-of-55) from the field and 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from 3-point range. The Aggies also held a narrow 31-30 advantage in rebounds.Â
CSUN resumes Big West Conference action Thursday, Jan. 14 with a trek to Honolulu to face Hawai'i. Tip off between the Matadors and Rainbow Wahine is slated for 7 p.m. HT // 9 p.m. PT. The Matadors return home on Jan. 16 to face UC Santa Barbara at 4 p.m. as part of a CSUN Basketball In-N-Out Doubleheader. The game will be followed by a CSUN-UC Riverside contest at approximately 7:30 p.m.Â
