NORTHRIDGE, CA - Aeryn Owens had a team-high nine kills Saturday but the CSUN women's volleyball suffered its fourth consecutive loss, 25-14, 25-21, 25-15 at Long Beach State's Walter Pyramid.
The loss drops the Matadors to 6-12 overall and 2-4 in the Big West.
Owens had nine kills and eight digs but hit .032 on a match-high 31 swings. Melissa Eaglin added seven kills on .294 hitting as she combined with Rachel Diaz for 10 kills on .267 hitting from the CSUN middle duo. Senior Julie Haake chipped in five kills (.118), three digs and one block. Diaz, Haake, Owens and Erin Indermill each had one ace in the loss.
Lauren Conati and Maddie Leiphardt combined for 24 assists but the Matadors struggled offensively, hitting just .108 (31-20-102) as a team. In comparison, the host 49ers hit .425 (40-6-80) as they remained unbeaten in conference play.
An Owens kill kept CSUN close (13-11) in the opening set when a 3-0 Long Beach run pushed the lead to 16-11. Another Owens kill kept the Matadors in striking distance at 18-14 but CSUN would not score the remainder of the set, falling 25-14.
CSUN's best chance at taking a set came in the second frame as the Matadors nearly overcame an 11-point 49er lead. Trailing 21-10, a Haake kill capped a 9-1 CSUN run which forced a Long Beach timeout at 22-19. CSUN rallied for two more points on 49er miscues to get within 22-21 but Long Beach scored three unanswered to close the set 25-21.
In the final set, a 5-0 run by Long Beach broke open a tight 11-9 score boosting the lead back to seven. An Owens kill temporarily cut the lead to six (16-10) but the Matadors could get no closer in dropping the set 25-15.
Ashley Murray had a match-high 10 kills for the 49ers who improved to 13-7 overall and 7-0 in the Big West.
CSUN will remain on the road for its next two matches, Oct. 21 at Cal Poly and Oct. 22 at UC Santa Barbara.
