NORTHRIDGE, CA---
A goal in the fourth minute proved to be enough in CSUN Women's Soccer's (9-3-5, 4-1-1 BWC) 1-0 victory over UC Irvine (10-5-1, 2-1-1 BWC) on Sunday afternoon at Anteater Stadium. Goalkeeper Jovani McCaskill became CSUN's all-time single season shutout leader with her 12th clean sheet of the season. Cynthia Sanchez netted her third goal and second game winner of the season while Camille Watson provided her fourth assist of 2016. With the victory, the Matadors have posted four-straight conference shutout wins for the first time in program history.Â
Â
Heading into Sunday's match, the Matadors had already set a new program record for shutouts in a season after registering three consecutive 1-0 wins. Despite squaring off with an Anteater team that possessed the second-most goals in the conference (25), CSUN again showcased its stellar defense by holding UCI scoreless over 90 minutes of action.Â
Coming out of the gate strong, the Matadors pressed in the early going and earned a pair of solid looks at the net. In the third minute, Kourtney Kutscher took the game's first shot from outside the right of the box but the ball went wide left. Moments later, the Matadors cashed in on a drive up the field to take the lead.Â
Moving the ball into the UCI box, Watson delivered a pass to Sanchez who fired a shot from 10 yards that rolled inside the left post to put CSUN in front less than five minutes into the match.Â
UC Irvine looked for the equalizer in the opening period, putting three of its four shots on frame. The Matadors recorded a team save in the 26th minute after a corner kick led to a scramble deep in the box. McCaskill also made two saves in the first half including stopping a long shot before halftime to maintain the CSUN 1-0 lead.
The Matadors earned opportunities of their own to double their advantage throughout the afternoon. Off a set piece, Kirsten Von Meter headed a shot in the 39th minute that was saved by Maddie Newsom. After intermission, the Matadors also received a penalty shot after a UCI foul inside its own box. Watson took the shot but Newsom again made a save by going to her right on a diving play.Â
Watson delivered a pair of shots in the second half including an attempt that Newsome snarred in the 65th minute. Sylvia Trinh also put a shot on frame on a running strike from 18 yards out at the 78:52 mark.Â
On the flip side, the Anteaters came within inches of tying the game in the 58th minute after Grayson Galbraith hit the cross bar following a CSUN foul. In another close call, McCaskill tracked down a header from Noel Baham at the far post late in the match.Â
UCI took three shots in the final 4:35 but none of the attempts would reach the frame as the Matadors secured their 13th shutout of the season.Â
McCaskill notched her 12th individual shutout, moving her ahead of Cynthia Jacobo (2012) and Jenny Willemse (2001) for the most clean sheets in a season in team history. Sitting in third place in the Matadors' all-time career shutout list, McCaskill's 19 shutouts at CSUN are eight shy of the all-time mark held by Jacobo.Â
Continuing to move up the all-time career scoring list, Sanchez climbed into a fourth-place tie with Brianna Monka (2004-05) with her 17th career goal. Watson also moved a tie for sixth place in the Matadors' career assist list with her 10th helper on the Sanchez score.Â
Since giving up a golden goal at Long Beach State on Oct. 2, the Matadors have not surrendered any scoring over the last 361:27 of matches.Â
CSUN will take a week off from Big West competition and will host Oklahoma on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 11:30 a.m.Â
