CSUN Women's Soccer (9-4-5, 4-1-1 BWC) closes the regular season with an opportunity to reach the Big West Conference Tournament and possibly win its first Big West Conference Regular Season Championship. The Matadors host Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m. on Friday and face Hawai'i in their regular season finale on Senior Day on Sunday at 2 p.m. Live stats will be available for both matches and Sunday's regular season finale will be streamed live on the CSUN Sports Network via Big West.TV. Prior to Sunday's match, the Matadors will honor their nine seniors in a special pregame ceremony.Â
In the Big West Conference standings, CSUNÂ is tied with UC Irvine for the top spot in the conference standings with 13 points. Cal State Fullerton is second with 12 points while Long Beach State holds the fourth position at 11 points. The trio of UC Santa Barbara, Hawai'i and UC Davis are all in fifth place with seven points heading into the weekend. The Matadors need one more point or the trio of teams in fifth place to either lose or tie once more in order to clinch a berth into the conference tournament set to begin on Thursday, Nov. 3. CSUN could clinch a conference regular season crown with two more wins. The Matadors hold the tiebreaker over the Anteaters after defeating the team 1-0 on Oct. 16 and would earn the first seed in the conference tournament should a tie occur at the top of the standings.Â
CSUN had its four-game winning streak snapped after a tough non-conference loss to Oklahoma last Sunday. With the game squared at 0-0, the Sooners' Kyle Escobedo scored with 1:24 left in regulation to lift her team to victory. Despite holding Oklahoma to nine shots, the Matadors had their home shutout streak snapped after shutting out seven-straight opponents at Matador Soccer Field. The goal from Escobedo was just the second goal scored at CSUN this season, ending a string that reached over 809 minutes of scoreless soccer.Â
As a team, the Matadors remain first in the Big West in shutout percentage (.722), goals-against-average (.415) and save percentage (.899). Junior goalkeeper Jovani McCaskill also continues to lead the nation in shutouts with 12 while she is also first in the conference in GAA (.416) and save percentage (.896).Â
CSUN also continues to lead the Big West in shots per game with 14.6Â while the team is second in shots on goal per game with 6.1. Leading CSUN in shots, senior forward Camille Watson is also tops on the team in points with 10 and she is tied with junior forward Cynthia Sanchez and sophomore defender Lindsay Kutscher with a team-best three goals on the season. Watson is also tied with senior midfielder Sylvia Trinh with the most assists on the team with four.Â
Sunday's regular season finale against the Rainbow Wahine represents the final home match for seniors Nicole Thompson, Taylor Hobson, Kourtney Kutscher, Krystal Kutscher, Briana Geffre, Breanna McCallum, Kyla Diekmann, Watson and Trinh. The nine student-athletes have combined to play in 489 matches and have totaled 27 goals, 38 assists and 92 points in their careers. Also the group has helped CSUN reach the Big West Conference Tournament twice while Hobson, Thompson, Trinh and Kourtney Kutscher were all members of the 2012 team that won the conference championship. With the nine seniors leading the way, the Matadors have posted a new program record with 13 shutouts in addition to the most shutouts in a row (6) and most consecutive shutouts against conference opponents (4) in team history. Â
In the all-time head to head matchup with Cal State Fullerton, the Titans lead the Matadors 14-6-1. Fullerton has won four-straight games in the series, which have all been decided by a 1-0 score. The Matadors have not beaten the Titans since the 2012 Big West Conference Championship game. CSUNÂ also has not picked up a victory at home against Fullerton since the 2010 season.
The Matadors own an 8-3-1 record all-time against the Rainbow Wahine and are 2-1-1 since Hawai'i joined the Big West Conference in 2012. CSUN has won five of seven all-time meetings at home including holding a three-match winning streak. Last season, McCallum netted a second-half goal to lift CSUN to a 1-0 win at Hawai'i.
