NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (8-6-4, 5-2-3 BWC) defeated UC Riverside 1-0 in overtime Saturday night in a Big West Conference match at Matador Soccer Field. Gabe Robinson delivered a long throw-in, Patrick Hickman flicked a header to the back post and Samuel Dadzie slammed home the game-winning goal in the second minute of overtime to give CSUN the 2016 Big West South Division Championship.
With the victory, CSUN is the No. 1 seed in the South Division for the upcoming Big West Tournament. The Matadors will host the winner of Sacramento State-UC Riverside on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at Matador Soccer Field. The Hornets and Highlanders play on Saturday, Nov. 5 in Sacramento in the opening round of the Big West Tournament. The Big West Championship is set for Saturday, Nov. 12.
Saturday's contest was a physical affair that featured 30 fouls and four yellow cards. Both teams were denied appeals for a penalty kick in the first half and what appeared to be a spot kick for CSUN became a yellow card for diving.
UC Riverside controlled the pace in the first half, out-shooting CSUN 7-1. The Highlanders forced two strong saves from CSUN goalkeeper Kevin Marquez and a header from James Alewine III clanged off the crossbar in the 21st minute.
In the second half, CSUN made adjustments and fired off four shots and forced three saves by the UCR goalkeeper. Juan Fernando Samayoa, Darion Mealing and Robinson had the shots on goal and the Matadors and Highlanders went to overtime scoreless.
CSUN worked a throw-in down the right side of the pitch to set up Robinson's throw. The assist was his second of the season and Hickman recorded his first helper of the year.
In goal, Marquez made the two saves to post his third clean sheet of the season and help keep CSUN unblemished at home (5-0-2) in 2016. He has 89 saves and a .795 save percentage on the season.
Before the match, CSUN honored its six seniors participating in their final regular season contest at Matador Soccer Field: Richard Martinez, Shane Steffes, Robinson, Hickman, Marquez and Samayoa. CSUN claimed the Big West South Division for the second time in program history and for the first time since 2012.
