NORTHRIDGE, CA - After dropping the first two sets to UC Irvine, the CSUN Matadors stormed back to take the final three sets and earn their first home win of the 2016 season Saturday at The Matadome.
CSUN (7-15, 3-7 Big West) snapped a seven-match skid in topping the Anteaters for the second time in five sets this season. In the process, the Matadors won at home for the first time in five tries this season.
Aeryn Owens and Julie Haake shared match-high honors in kills as each put down 14 with Haake hitting .220 on 41 swings and Owens hitting .159 on 44 attacks. Owens posted her sixth double-double by adding 11 digs while junior setter Lauren Conati also notched the double-double with 41 assists and 12 digs.
Morgan Salone contributed a season-high nine kills on .412 hitting and Nickeisha Williams came off the bench to add six important kills in the comeback.
The Matadors had slight edge in team digs (69-67) as junior libero Katie Sato scooped up a team-high 25 digs. It wasn't a great offensive night for either squad as the host Matadors hit .200 (53-22-155) compared to .188 (57-25-170) for the Anteaters.
After being out-hit .364 to .157 over the first two sets, CSUN found the urgency over the final three frames.
"I think the emotions changed a little bit, I got the sense they knew their backs were against the wall," said CSUN head coach Jeff Stork. "They brought a little extra and I was proud of the way we played throughout the match."
The Matadors out-hit the visitors .143 to .070 in taking set three 25-20 and then held UCI to eight kills and .032 hitting in claiming the fourth 25-15. CSUN then committed just a single hitting error in the final set as they bolted to an 8-4 lead and held on to win 15-11.
Harlee Kekauoha led the Anteaters (10-14, 5-5) with 13 kills while a pair of UCI hitters added 10.
CSUN concludes a three-match homestand this coming Tuesday (Nov. 1) as the Matadors host UC Riverside at 7 p.m.
