NORTHRIDGE, CA---
CSUN Men's Basketball has signed guard Terrell Gomez, head coach Reggie Theus announced. Gomez is a speedy 5'8'' point guard who graduated from Inglewood High School and is currently playing post-grad basketball with Middlebrooks Academy in Los Angeles, CA.Â
"We are very happy that Terrell decided to play his college basketball here at CSUN," said Theus. "He has all the tools to be a fantastic point guard and he's got the essential qualities you need to be a leader. He also does very well academically. Obviously, he went to Inglewood High School, where I attended, so I had the opportunity to watch him a lot. I've noticed that everywhere he's gone, he's immediately had people gravitate towards him because of his ability to lead. He has a gift for it."Â
Gomez played four seasons with the Sentinels including three seasons at the varsity level. In his last season, Gomez helped the Sentinels to a second round appearance in the CIF State Division I Championship as the team finished ranked 33rd in the state according to MaxPreps. Gomez averaged 17 points, seven assists and two steals during his senior campaign to lead Inglewood to 22 victories.Â
With Gomez in the back court, Inglewood made the CIF Southern Section Tournament three times and the team finished no fewer than third in the Bay League. As a sophomore, Gomez helped guide Inglewood to the semifinal of the CIF Southern Section Division I-AA Tournament after an 18-win season.Â
A Daily Breeze All-Area selection as a junior and senior, Gomez also earned Most Outstanding Player in the Bay League in 2015. In his first season at the varsity level in 2014, Gomez received All-CIF Division I-AA honors.
Gomez will join a Matador team that will return a veteran laden squad in 2017-18 comprised of primarily upperclassmen. With the ability to shoot the ball from the outside and run the offense, Gomez is excited to bring different facets to the Matadors' team both offensively and defensively.
"I want to bring leadership to the team," said Gomez. "I know I'll probably be youngest on the team but I feel like I can knock down a lot of shots and get after it on defense."
Playing prep basketball at Inglewood High School where Theus' No. 24Â jersey was retired in 2014, Gomez is eager to learn from the Matador head coach.Â
"When his jersey was retired there I took a picture with him," said Gomez. "It's great to play for a coach that played high school ball there and grew up in the same areas as myself."
Looking at his accomplishments, Gomez expressed gratitude to his family and friends for helping him make it to the collegiate level.Â
"I'm really thankful of my parents," said Gomez. "My mom is very supportive of me, and even though he works a lot my dad comes to my games when he's able to. I'd like to thank my brother too, who played collegiately at Iona College, because he is a big person that I look up to. My family and friends have always been in my corner and they have been very positive."
