NORTHRIDGE, CA - Coming in having won three of its last four matches, the CSUN women's volleyball team ran into a buzzsaw Saturday night as the visiting Long Beach State 49ers handed the Matadors a 25-19, 25-14, 25-20 loss inside The Matadome.
The loss drops CSUN to 9-17 overall and 5-9 in the Big West while Long Beach State improves to 17-9 overall and 11-2 in conference.
Senior Julie Haake led the Matadors with eight kills (.133) while sophomore Aeryn Owens added seven (.217). Both CSUN middles hit well as Melissa Eaglin had five kills on .308 hitting and Morgan Salone also had five kills, hitting .300. Eaglin also led the team with a pair of blocks.
Setter Lauren Conati had 22 assists and served one of CSUN's two aces while libero Katie Sato had the other, along with six digs.
The visitors wound up posting a hitting advantage of .295 to CSUN's .156 and the Beach also had a sizable advantage in aces (8-2) and digs (42-30).
"It certainly wasn't a good match for us, I was hoping we would play better," said CSUN head coach Jeff Stork. "Long Beach is a very good team that is well coached. They were more physical than we were, I would have liked to have stressed their offense a little bit more than we did."
CSUN has two matches remaining in 2016 as the Matadors travel to UC Riverside on Friday before hosting Cal State Fullerton on Saturday. Prior to Saturday's 4 p.m. match, CSUN will honor seniors Julie Haake and Maddie Leiphardt.
