NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team put on a strong performance at its Fall Invitational this past weekend as the Matadors hosted a group of regional and conference rivals in the San Fernando Valley. Kristen Poei and Mickey Hsu won their doubles flight and Emma Roenholt won her singles flight in addition to a bunch of other positive results for the Matadors.Â
"Mickey and Kristen showed why they are a special team and deserving of their national ranking. They were able to problem solve their way against three very good teams," said CSUN head coach Gary Victor. "Emma fought through her injuries and played with a focus and determination that will serve her well throughout her career. Ki had an outstanding fall and Arpe has improved by leaps and bounds. Samantha Judan and Arpe played an excellent match on Sunday and continue to improve. Skyla Alcon had a very good fall (won the San Diego St. Fall Invitational) and Elisa Elhadj reached the fourth round of regionals a few weeks ago. Elisa, Emma and Mari have been outstanding additions to an incredibly cohesive and motivated team and we are excited for the spring season. "
A pair of seniors, Poei and Hsu won three matches over the weekend to claim the top doubles draw. They toppled a tandem from Utah State (8-5), Cal State LA (8-6) and then defeated a tandem from LMU (8-6) to capture the flight championship. Hsu and Poei have earned back-to-back First Team All-Big West honors and are the most successful doubles team in school history. They also won their doubles flight at the 2015 CSUN Fall Invitational.Â
Roenholt, a freshman from Denmark, won her singles flight with a great showing. She defeated an opponent from Cal State Fullerton (6-1, 7-6) and then needed three sets to defeat an opponent from Utah State (2-6, 6-4, 6-3) in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals of the draw, she defeated another Utah State opponent (6-3, 6-4) and then defeated a rival from Cal State Fullerton (6-3, 6-2) in the flight championship.Â
In other doubles action, Mari Udagawa teamed with Long Beach's Maren Helgo in the second flight of doubles play. The duo defeated teams from Cal State Fullerton and Utah State to reach the flight championship. Unfortunately, they fell to a pair from Utah State. Another mixed team, featuring CSUN's Arpe Bagumyan and UCSB's McKenzie Majerle to win a match in their doubles flight.Â
In other singles results, Hsu and Kiryang Kim reached the consolation finals of the top flight. After suffering a tough defeat in the opening round, Hsu rallied by handling an opponent from Utah State. Kim rebounded from an opening-round loss to LMU to defeat opponents from Cal Poly and LMU to reach the consolation final. She added a third victory in singles play over the weekend to finish 3-1 in singles play.Â
Poei also reached the consolation finals of her singles flight, the same one that Roenholt won. A loss to UCR was quickly overcome by victories over Cal Poly and Westmont before she fell to a rival from Cal State Fullerton.Â
Finally, Bagumyan and Udagawa reached the semifinals of their singles flight. Udagawa defeated opponents from UC Riverside and LMU before falling to a rival from Utah State. Bagumyan also defeated an opponent from UCR in the opening round and scored a second-round victory over an opponent from Cal State LA before falling to a player from Utah State.Â
