NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN women's volleyball team defeated Cal State Fullerton in four sets (30-32, 25-16, 25-22, 25-18) Saturday at The Matadome to cap the 2016 season.
Senior Julie Haake, who was honored along with fellow senior Maddie Leiphardt in a pregame ceremony, capped her Matador career in impressive fashion as she pounded a match-high 18 kills, hitting .385 on 39 swings. Sophomore Aeryn Owens added 13 kills and 14 digs for her team leading eighth double-double while also serving a career-high four aces. Freshman Morgan Salone chipped in a season-high 10 kills, hitting .350 on 20 swings to cap her first season.
Leiphardt also notched a double-double in her final collegiate match as she had 21 assists and 12 digs. The CSUN back row of libero Katie Sato and defensive specialists Erin Indermill and Kristey Markle combined for 42 digs as CSUN had a 76-61 advantage in team digs.
In finishing the season with an overall record of 11-17 and 7-9 in the Big West, the Matadors closed the season winning five of their last seven matches.
Neither team hit particularly well on Saturday as the host Matadors hit .195 (59-28-159) to Cal State Fullerton's .103 (43-27-155). The visiting Titans kept themselves in the match with a strong blocking effort, posting 13.0 team blocks to 7.0 for CSUN.
The Matadors were denied an opening set win when the visitors saved a pair of set points and won a marathon 32-30 decision. But CSUN jumped out to a 9-5 lead in set two and eventually bumped the lead to seven (17-10) when a Fullerton attack found the net. Leading 24-16, the Matadors got an Owens ace to cash in set point and even the match at one set apiece.
The final two sets went to CSUN as the Matadors held a 14-10 lead at the midpoint. The Titans then rolled off five straight points to erase the CSUN lead when the Matadors rebounded to take a three-point lead at 21-18. Still leading by two at 24-22, Owens and Salone put up a block and the Matadors took a two sets to one lead. After seeing a 17-10 lead in the fourth set cut to 17-13, CSUN closed the set on an 8-5 run to win 25-18 with Haake providing the clinching kill.
Madeline Schneider led Cal State Fullerton (6-24, 1-15) with 13 kills.
