Junior Daphne Pofek Finishes with Career-High 10 Strikeouts vs. Bluejays
TEMPE, Ariz. --- The CSUN softball team (2-0) picked up a pair of 3-2 victories on its first day of the 2016 season. At the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, AZ, the Matadors defeated Creighton and Utah State. Against the Bluejays, Savannah Horvath blasted the game-winning home run while Daphne Pofek struck out a career-high 10 batters. Against the Aggies, CSUN held on for a 3-2 victory as Katie Chenault earned her first career win and Rebecca Bell earned her first career save as Matadors.Â
"We kept it interesting today and saw some good things, but we still have plenty we need to work on," CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers said. "We found ways to get the wins today, but it was far from our best softball. The pitchers are trying to figure out their roles and get comfortable. Daphne went after hitters and threw well today, especially with the career high in strikeouts. I'd like to eliminate some of the free passes, but Katie and Rebecca figured it out and complimented each other well."Â
Creighton Recap
Sophomore Savannah Horvath hit a game-winning solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to help lift the CSUN softball team (1-0) to a 3-2 comeback victory over Creighton in the Matadors' opening game at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, AZ. In the circle, junior Daphne Pofek struck out a career-high 10 batters and worked around some tough jams to help give CSUN a win in its season opener.Â
Down 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Horvath launched her 10th career home run over the fence in left field to push the Matadors ahead 3-2. After finishing second in the Big West Conference with 26 extra-base hits as a rookie, Horvath also added a double in the game and has 16 two-base hits for her career.Â
CSUN came back from an early 2-0 deficit as Creighton got a pair of two-out RBI singles off Pofek (1-0). Still, the junior persevered, recorded at least one strikeout in six of the seven innings and had three multi-strikeout frames. She worked around seven hits and two walks and the complete game was the third of her career.Â
The Matadors tied the game with a pair of sacrifice flies in the bottom of the third. Taylor Nate drew a walk to start the inning and Horvath doubled to left to put runners in scoring position. Taylor Glover and Katie Hooper then recorded consecutive sac flies with a Bluejay fielding error helping Horvath advance to third on Glover's out.Â
Freshman Mackenzie Babbitt had her first career hit and stolen base in the victory. Senior Ariana Wassmer had the Matadors' fourth hit.Â
Utah State Recap
The Matadors held off a late Aggies rally to improve to 2-0 on the day at the Kajikawa Classic.Â
Leading 3-0 in the top of the sixth, Utah State finally forced CSUN starter Katie Chenault (1-0) from the circle after she walked her sixth batter of the game. Rebecca Bell came in to relieve her. After a hit batter and a wild pitch, the Aggies got a two-run single. However, Bell would leave the tying and go-ahead runs on base to end the inning.Â
In the seventh, Bell recorded her first career save with a quick three outs. Chenault worked around three hits and six walks in five innings to go with five strikeouts to record her first career win as a Matador. Bell tossed the final two innings, scattering two hits with a strike out.Â
CSUN struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. With one out, Taylor Glover singled and then moved to second after Katie Hooper drew a walk. Madison Fleming then reached on an error and Ariana Wassmer drew a bases-loaded walk to score Glover. Madalyne Handy then drew another bases-loaded walk to score Hooper.Â
In the third, the Matadors tacked on another run. Sabrina Garcia roped a double in her first career at-bat and then scored on an RBI triple from Glover. The triple was the 12th of Glover's Matador career, good for third place in the all-time record books.Â
Glover finished 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI in the game while Hooper drew two walks and scored a run. Savannah Horvath had the team's fourth hit, her second double of the day, in the victory.Â
The Matadors return to action Saturday with a pair of games against Pac-12 opponents at the Kajikawa Classic. CSUN will square off with No. 21 Cal and Oregon State Saturday and then close out the tournament against Stanford on Sunday.Â
