Katie Hooper and Karlie Habitz Homer vs. Oregon State
TEMPE, Ariz. --- The CSUN softball team (2-2) lost to a pair of Pac-12 Conference opponents on its second day at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, AZ. Against No. 21 Cal, Madison Fleming had an RBI single and Savannah Horvath scored a run and stole a base, but the Golden Bears' offense produced enough to post a 6-1 victory. Against Oregon State, juniors Katie Hooper and Karlie Habitz hit back-to-back solo home runs to start the top of the sixth, but CSUN could not complete the comeback in a 6-2 loss to the Beavers.Â
"I thought today was a lot like yesterday. The pitchers did a good job of keeping us in the games, but we just did not get the timely hits we needed," CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers said. "We are starting to get runners in scoring position. We just need to execute in those situations."Â
Cal Recap
The CSUN softball team (2-1) lost 6-1 to No. 21 California Saturday evening in Tempe, AZ as part of the Kajikawa Classic. Madison Fleming collected her first RBI of the season and Savannah Horvath stole her first base of the season, but the Golden Bears offense pushed six runs across off 14 hits to earn the win.Â
Despite not getting a hit in the contest, Horvath made the most of her time on base. She was hit by a pitch, stole second base and then scored on an RBI single from Fleming in the bottom of the first. That cut the Cal lead to 2-1 at the time.Â
However, CSUN would collect five hits over the next six innings and would not get any closer than that first-inning deficit. Cal got the run back in the top of the second and then tacked on three more in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.Â
Senior Maylynn Mitchell led the Matadors with two base hits while Katie Hooper and Ariana Wassmer each collected singles.Â
In the circle, Taylor Troost (0-1) made her Matador debut and limited the damage Cal could inflict most of the game. Of their 14 hits, the Golden Bears had 13 singles and Troost finished with one strikeout and one walk in 6.0 innings of work. Daphne Pofek recorded the final three outs for CSUN.
Nisa Ontiveros finished with eight strikeouts in the win for Oregon State.Â
Oregon State Recap
In the second game of the day, CSUN got to within 3-2 of Oregon State off a pair of solo home runs from Katie Hooper and Karlie Habitz in the sixth inning. However, the Beavers got three insurance runs in their half of the inning and took a 6-2 victory.Â
Daphne Pofek (1-1) started for CSUN in the circle and kept the game scoreless until the fifth inning. The Beavers then got three runs in the fifth and sixth innings, all off Pofek, to claim the victory. Pofek allowed six hits with five walks and had three strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. Katie Chenault got the final out of the sixth for CSUN.Â
At the plate, Hooper and Habitz opened the top of the sixth inning with consecutive solo home runs. The deep fly was the 20th of Hooper's career and the first for Habitz in a Matador uniform. Habitz added a single and Mackenzie Babbitt picked up her first career double in defeat.Â
In the top of the fifth, the Matadors threatened when Maylynn Mitchell drew a walk and Babbitt doubled to center to put runners in scoring position with one out. After the second out was recorded, Savannah Horvath was intentionally walked to load the bases but the final out was recorded in the next at-bat.Â
Meehra Nelson had seven strikeouts in a complete-game performance to earn the win for OSU.Â
The Matadors close out their time in Arizona Sunday with a contest against Stanford. First pitch is set for approximately 1:30 p.m. MT // 12:30 p.m. PT.Â
