Junior Katie Hooper Delivers Game-Winning Sac Fly
TEMPE, Ariz. -- The CSUN softball team (3-2) defeated Stanford 4-3 Sunday afternoon in its final game at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, AZ. Tied 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, the Matadors quickly manufactured a run as Savannah Horvath, Taylor Glover and Katie Hooper teamed up to help CSUN to its second-straight victory over the Cardinal.Â
Horvath started the seventh with a walk and then moved to second as Glover dropped down a bunt single. The pair executed a double steal to move into scoring position and Hooper drove home Horvath for the winning run. The victory marked the Matadors' second straight against Stanford and their third win in the all-time series between the two schools since 1998.Â
Glover had a solid day at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a run scored and her first stolen base of the season. In the first, she scored as the result of a Stanford error. In the second, she delivered a two-run, two-out single to score Maylynn Mitchell and Sabrina Garcia.Â
Stanford tied the game with a run in the third and two more in the fifth. Daphne Pofek (2-1) earned her second win of the weekend with three scoreless innings of relief. She finished with four strikeouts and three walks and did not allow a hit.Â
Rebecca Bell started the game for CSUN, allowing four hits in three innings with one strikeout and one walk. Katie Chenault tossed 1.0 innings and allowed two earned runs and a walk.Â
Hooper also had a multi-hit game and picked up her third RBI of the weekend. She now has 95 for her career, the ninth-most in program history.Â
The Matadors remain on the road next week, traveling to Las Vegas, NV for five games as part of the Wilson/DeMarini Desert Classic hosted by UNLV. At the tournament, which runs Feb. 19-21, CSUN will face Weber State, Portland State, Colorado State, Wichita State and Utah State.Â
