Matadors Split First Day at DeMarini Desert Classic

Taylor Nate Hits Home Runs in Both Games for CSUN
LAS VEGAS, Nev. --- The CSUN softball team (4-3) lost 9-8 to Weber State and defeated Portland State 16-12 Friday at the DeMarini Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. The Matadors and Wildcats engaged in a slugfest that lasted all seven innings, but CSUN was unable to complete the rally after trailing by as many as five runs earlier in the game. In the second game, CSUN defeated Portland State 16-12 and the offensive continued as the teams combined for 28 runs and 31 hits while Karlie Habitz went 4-for-4 with six RBIs off two doubles and a home run.Â
Weber State Recap
Both teams flashed offense throughout the game, combining for 18 hits of which eight were for extra bases. The Wildcats jumped out to a five-run lead in the second inning, scoring four runs with two outs off CSUN starter Daphne Pofek (2-2). A junior from Riverside, Pofek tossed 3.1 innings of work with five earned runs and four strikeouts in taking the loss.Â
CSUN got back a run in the bottom of the second as Ariana Wassmer scored on a throwing error from the Weber State catcher when Taylor Nate stole second on the play.Â
After Weber State tacked on a run in the top of the fourth, the Matadors responded with two in their half of the frame. Karlie Habitz reached on an error to start the inning and was lifted for Aliyah Ricks as a pinch runner. Wassmer then singled and she and Ricks successfully executed a double steal to put runners in scoring position. Maylynn Mitchell then delivered an RBI single and Mackenzie Babbitt scored Wassmer on a sac fly.Â
The fifth inning saw a repeat of the fourth with Weber State scoring once and CSUN adding two runs. In the bottom of the frame, Savannah Horvath drew a one-out walk and then moved to third on a single from Taylor Glover. A Weber State error allowed Horvath to score and put two runners on for CSUN. After a strikeout looking, Wassmer delivered an RBI single that scored Glover.Â
In the sixth Weber State would score twice, including the winning run. CSUN responded with three runs to pull back to within one in its half of the sixth. Babbitt led off the inning with a walk and then scored on a two-run home run from Taylor Nate. With two outs, Glover mashed her first home run of the season to draw CSUN to within 9-8.
After the Wildcats went quietly in the seventh, CSUN put the leadoff runner on base with a walk. A sacrifice bunt pushed the pinch runner Haileigh Gonzalez to second, but the next two batters went down and the rally ended.Â
Glover finished 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Wassmer was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored, a stolen base and an RBI. Nate went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a stolen base.Â
In the circle, Taylor Troost tossed 2.2 innings and allowed two earned runs with three strikeouts. Katie Chenault tossed 1.0 innings and allowed two runs and three walks.Â

The second game of the day saw CSUN post a 16-12 victory over Portland State that featured 31 hits. Karlie Habitz went a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and six RBIs while Taylor Nate finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored, four RBIs and her second home run of the day.Â
In the slugfest, the Matadors finished with 15 hits, the Vikings totaled 16 and both teams committed two errors.Â
The Matadors jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Katie Hooper and Habitz strung together back-to-back doubles with two outs. The double was the 24th of Hooper's CSUN career.Â
After the Vikings tied the game with a run in their half of the first, CSUN exploded for 11 runs over the second and the third innings.
In the second, Selina Tajalle and Tara Kliebenstein reached safely to start the inning and Tajalle scored on an RBI single from Nate. An error allowed Kliebenstein to score and Savannah Horvath picked up an RBI single. Taylor Glover then added a sac fly and with two outs, Habitz delivered an RBI single to score Horvath.Â
In the third inning, Nate and Sabrina Garcia reached on bunt singles with one out in the frame. Horvath then doubled to score Nate and Glover roped a two-run single for her second and third RBI of the game. Hooper reached on an error and Habitz brought her and Glover home with a three-run home run.Â
On the brink of a run-rule loss, the Vikings rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the game 12-8. CSUN starter Rebecca Bell was chased from the circle in the inning and replaced by Taylor Troost, who was then replaced by Daphne Pofek before the Matadors could record the third out.Â
In the top of the sixth, CSUN scored three times. Habitz and Haileigh Gonzalez both drew walks and then scored on a two-out, three-run home run from Nate. Portland State would answer with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 15-10.Â
The Matadors tacked on one final run in the top of the seventh. Madalyne Handy scored on Habitz's second double of the day. The six RBIs for the redshirt junior was one shy of tying the school record for a single game, a feat that Hooper that accomplished in the 2015 season.Â
Portland State would conclude the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the seventh before the final out was recorded.Â
In addition to Habitz and Nate's standout performances, Horvath went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs while Glover had three RBIs. Garcia and Hooper scored two runs apiece and five other Matadors scored a run.Â
In the circle, Pofek (3-2) tossed the final 3.1 innings to earn the win. She allowed eight his, three earned runs and had two strikeouts. Bell tossed 3.1 innings and allowed six earned runs with a strikeout.Â
Saturday, CSUN continues its time in Las Vegas with games against Wichita State and Colorado State.Â
