Matadors Defeat San Diego State for First Time since 2010
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (7-6) split its two games Saturday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. In their first game of the day, the Matadors fell short in a 3-1 loss to Utah. In the nightcap, the Matadors held on for a 5-4 victory over San Diego State, CSUN's first win over the Aztecs since the 2010 season.
Utah Recap
The Matadors and Utes (11-5) engaged in a tight contest that was 1-0 in Utah's favor until the start of the sixth inning.
After Utah pushed a run across in the bottom of the first, CSUN starter Rebecca Bell (0-1) did a good job of keeping the Matadors in the game. Bell worked out of a tough jam in the fourth to preserve the one-run deficit.
In the top of the sixth, CSUN broke through for the tying run. Taylor Glover started the frame with a single and then came around to score on a two-out error off a groundball from Maylynn Mitchell.
The tie would be short lived however. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Utah pulled ahead for good with a two-run home run.
Despite the loss, Bell pitched well. She allowed seven hits and three walks over six innings of work.
San Diego State Recap
In their second game Saturday, the Matadors held on for a 5-4 win against San Diego State.
Freshman Taylor Troost tossed a complete game with seven strikeouts to earn her second win of the year. She worked around 10 hits and two walks in the win.
At the plate, CSUN scored four runs in the bottom of the first to give the Matadors a 4-2 advantage. Savannah Horvath and Taylor Glover started the inning with back-to-back doubles. With two outs, Aliyah Ricks delivered an RBI single to score Glover and Ariana Wassmer then belted a two-run home run, her first of the season.
The Matadors tacked on what would be the winning run in the bottom of the second. Tara Kliebenstein started the inning with a double and then scored on another double from Glover.
Glover finished 3-for-4 at the plate with the two doubles and two RBIs. Ricks and Horvath also had two hits in the victory, CSUN's first over San Diego State since 2010 and first at a neutral site since 2003.
The Matadors conclude their time at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Sunday with a pair of games, facing Boise State and No. 20 Fresno State.Â
