CSUN Scores Five Runs in Fourth Inning in 9-4 Victory
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -- The CSUN softball team (8-7) defeated Boise State 9-4 and lost 3-1 to No. 20 Fresno State Sunday afternoon in a pair of games at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. Against the Broncos, a key five-run inning pushed the Matadors to a comeback victory. In the nightcap, Fresno State hit three solo home runs to edge the Matadors in one of the final games in the tournament.Â

Senior Ariana Wassmer had two hits and two RBIs, Tara Kliebenstein had two hits, including her first career triple, and Katie Chenault tossed five innings of relief softball to help the Matadors rally past the Broncos (3-12) for their second-straight win in the all-time series between the two programs. Â
Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth, CSUN scored five runs in the frame to take control of the contest. Taylor Nate started the inning with a single and then stole second base. With one out, she scored the tying run on an RBI double from Savannah Horvath, who then came around to score the go-ahead run on an RBI triple from Taylor Glover.
Katie Hooper then picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice as the Broncos could not get the out at the plate. After Karlie Habitz walked and Ricks moved a pair of pinch runners, Haileigh Gonzalez and Selina Tajalle, up 60 feet, Wassmer laced a single into right field to give the Matadors an 8-4 advantage.Â
The Matadors tacked on a ninth run in the fifth when Kliebenstein scored on an error off the bat of Horvath, who picked up her second RBI of the game on the play. The triple was the Matadors' second of the game and the first of her career.Â
CSUN trailed 3-0 after Boise State hit a three-run home run off CSUN starter Rebecca Bell. However, the Matadors quickly got two runs back in their half of the frame.Â
Ricks started the inning by drawing a walk and then quickly stealing second. Wassmer singled to right to move Ricks to third and a Boise State error on the next play loaded the bases. Nate was then hit by a pitch to force in Ricks and then Kliebenstein singled to center to score Wassmer.Â
Chenault (2-0) came into relieve Bell in the third and after escaping a jam by allowing a run in the frame, settled in and was efficient for the rest of the game. She finished with one earned run and one hit allowed in five innings. She had four strikeouts and four walks.Â
Ricks tied a career high with two stolen bases in the victory and Horvath added two to raise her season total to a team-high six. The triple was Glover's 13th of her career and Horvath has a team-high seven doubles on the season.
Fresno State Recap
Jill Compton allowed just two Matador hits over seven innings as No. 20 Fresno State (12-3) defeated CSUN 3-1. Taylor Glover had both of those hits, including her third double of the weekend, and Savannah Horvath extended her streak of safely reaching base to 15 games to start the season.Â
Taylor Troost (2-4) took the loss in the circle for CSUN, throwing 6.0 innings of work. She had seven strikeouts and allowed seven hits and the three earned runs. The Bulldogs got a solo shot in the bottom of the first and two in the bottom of the fifth to pull away from the Matadors.Â
CSUN tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth. Horvath was hit by a pitch and moved to third on Glover's two-bagger. With one out, Karlie Habitz picked up an RBI on a groundout.Â
The Matadors return to action next week with their 2016 home-opening weekend. On Mar. 4, the Matadors open their home slate with a 3 p.m. contest against Syracuse and on Saturday, Mar. 6, CSUN faces Florida State at 9 a.m. and CSU Bakersfield at noon.
