Junior Daphne Pofek Tosses Five Innings of Scoreless Relief
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- The CSUN softball team (9-7) defeated Syracuse 5-2 Friday afternoon in the Matadors' opening game of the Stacy Winsberg Invitational at Matador Diamond. Junior Daphne Pofek returned to the circle to toss five innings of scoreless relief and senior Ariana Wassmer hit her second home run of the season as the Matadors posted their first win over an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponent since 2007.Â
Pitching for the first time since Feb. 20, Pofek (5-2) showed little rust in five innings of relief work. She allowed only one hit and worked around three walks and a hit batter to earn her fifth win of the season. She added two strikeouts and now has a team-best 3.50 ERA in 32 innings of work this season.Â
Offensively, the Matadors jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning of their 2016 home opener. Savannah Horvath extended her streak of reaching base safely to 16-straight games with a hit-by-pitch and then quickly stole second. After Taylor Glover singled on the infield, she broke for second and stole her third base of the season and 50th of her CSUN career. The throw went into the outfield and Horvath scored easily. Katie Hooper then plated Glover with an RBI single and she came around to score on an RBI double from Karlie Habitz.Â
Syracuse struck back for two runs in the top of the third inning to chase CSUN starter Taylor Troost from the circle. The rookie worked two perfect innings before being lifted, but was charged with both earned runs. She allowed two hits and had a strikeout in the two innings.Â
In the bottom of the third, the Matadors quickly got one of the runs back. Aliyah Ricks led off the inning with a single and then moved to second on an error by the center fielder. With two outs, she would score on an RBI single from Maylynn Mitchell.Â
In the fifth, Wassmer launched a solo shot over the fence in left for her second deep fly of the season and fifth of her career. She is second on the team with a .333 batting average and has nine RBIs in 16 starts this season.Â
The victory over the Orange was the Matadors' first over an ACC opponent since a 4-3 victory over Florida State on Mar. 15, 2007. The Matadors also recorded their first win over Syracuse since 2005 and now lead the all-time series 3-2.Â
CSUN returns to action Saturday with a pair of games at Matador Diamond as part of the Stacy Winsberg Invitational. At 9 a.m., the Matadors face the No. 12 Florida State Seminoles. Then at noon, CSUN squares off with the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners.Â
