NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN beach volleyball team was blanked by a pair of nationally ranked teams Thursday at the Annenberg Community Beach House in Santa Monica.
The Matadors (1-2) opened the day with a morning contest against No. 3 UCLA with the Bruins sweeping all five matches.
On court one, Julie Haake and Maddie Leiphardt dropped a 21-12, 21-8 decision to the UCLA duo of Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara. Katie Sato and Lauren Conati pushed the Bruins' Izzy Carey and Elise Zappia on court two before bowing 21-12, 21-16. On court three, Aeryn Owens and Kristey Markle lost to Jordan Anderson and Kamila Tan 21-7, 21-18.
The final two matches saw Nada Dragovic and Kamden Maas drop a 21-11, 21-15 decision to Reily Buechler and Karly Drolson while on court five, UCLA's Laurel Weaver and Julie Consani clinched the win for the Bruins by handing Nicolette Stork and Nicolette Pinkney a 21-8, 21-14 setback.
Then against No. 4 Florida State, CSUN came away empty in all five matches with the duo of Owens and Markle coming to stealing a win. On court three, the CSUN duo wound up losing to Vanessa Freire and Annie Montgomery 24-22, 21-16.
On court one, Haake and Leiphardt fell to Julie Brown and Jace Pardon 21-12, 21-8. Conati and Sato played well again on court two despite falling to Kristina Pelleteri and Victoria Paranagua 21-14, 21-12. Dragovic and Maas lost 21-14, 21-6 on court four and Stork and Pinkney fell by the scores of 21-18, 21-15 on ourt five.
"I think the girls did a really good job preparing themselves today," said head coach Jeff Stork. "We're getting better as beach players and we're understanding the game better than we have in past seasons. We're thinking of the right play and right shot, it just comes down to execution. Both of the teams we played today have mainly beach only players so that makes it tough but we were in a lot of the sets, we just can't sustain it quite long enough."
