Sixth-Ranked Long Beach State Sweeps CSUN 5-0

NORTHRIDGE, CA - Playing its third consective road contest, the CSUN beach volleyball team came up empty in all five matches Tuesday afternoon at sixth-ranked Long Beach State.
In the first meeting of the two schools as beach members of newly formed Big West Conference, the 49ers (2-5) did not drop a set to the Matadors (1-3) in any of the five matches.
Julie Haake and Maddie Leiphardt came the closest to winning a set in the No. 1 match. Hakke and Leiphardt battled the 49ers top duo of Jenelle Hudson and Zoi Konstantopoulou before dropping set one by the score of 24-22. Long Beach then won the second set 21-16 despite 13 kills and 12 digs from Leiphardt and three aces from Haake.
In the No. 2 match, Rachel Nieto and Nele Barber handed Lauren Conati and Katie Sato a 21-13, 21-19 loss. CSUN's top two pairs have yet to pick up a win in 2016.
At No. 3, Aeryn Owens and Kristey Markle slipped to 1-3 on the season after falling to Sammie Thomas and Kobi Pekich 21-11, 21-18. At No. 4, Long Beach State's Mykah Wilson and Ciana Wagner defeated Nada Dragovic and Kamden Maas by the score of 21-5, 21-11.
Finally at No. 5, Ariana Garner and Peyton Grahovac swept CSUN's Nicoletta Stork and Nicolette Pinkney by the slim margin of 21-19, 21-18. The two teams also played an extra match with Morea Wagner and Hannah Henriksen handing the Matador duo of Rachel Gam and Erin Indermill their first loss of the season 21-18, 21-15.
After defeating CSU Bakersfield in their season opener, the Matadors have lost road matches to No. 3 UCLA, No. 4 Florida State and No. 6 Long Beach State. CSUN continues its road stretch this Saturday as the Matadors travel to Baskersfield to take on the host Roadrunners and Grand Canyon at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex.
