Matadors Drop a Pair in Bakersfield

NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN beach volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Saturday as the Matadors lost 4-1 to Grand Canyon and 3-2 to CSU Bakersfield at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex in Bakersfield.
CSUN, which dropped its one meeting with GCU and split its season series with CSU Bakersfield, drops to 1-5 on the season with the two losses.
In the early matches against Grand Canyon (8-1) on Saturday, Nicolette Pinkney and Nicoletta Stork picked up the Matadors' lone win in the No. 5 match. Pinkney and Stork swept the Lopes' Kami Dickerson and Brooke Razo, 21-19, 23-21 to earn the duo's first win of the season.
All other matches went to Grand Canyon as Mackenzie Phelps and Shannon Dugan swept Julie Haake and Maddie Leiphardt 21-16, 21-19 at No. 1. In the No. 2 match, Aleksandra Wachowicz and Molly Turner defeated Katie Sato and Lauren Conati by the score of 21-9, 21-10. CSUN's Rachel Gam and Kristey Markle lost a tough three-set match to Chloe Jenkins and Rebecca Conrad 20-22, 21-13, 15-7 at No. 3.
At No. 4, Erin Indermill teamed up with Aeryn Owens but fell to Jordyn Sanchez and Emilee Erichsen 21-12, 21-16. In the extra match, Nada Dragovic and Kamden Maas fell to Brandy Grant and Maggie DeMore 23-21, 21-14.
In the afternoon session, the host Roadrunners (2-4) avenged a season-opening loss to CSUN as they claimed three of the five sets to earn the win.
The Matadors switched up some of their pairs against Bakersfield as Sato and Conati played in the No. 1 match for the first time this season. The CSUN duo however fell to 0-6 this season after falling 22-20, 21-12 to Sydney Haynes and Carol Grasso.
Haake and Leiphardt played in the No. 2 match for the first time this season but also remained winless in six matches as the Roadrunner pair of Jocelyn Rodriguez and Edithza Urias won in three sets. Haake and Leiphardt won the first set handily, 21-12 but CSUB came back to claim the final two sets 21-18, 15-11.
At No. 3, Erin Indermill and Stephanie Serna paired up for the first time this season and were dealt a 21-13, 21-12 setback by Kayla Tinker and Kelsee Sawyer. In the No. 4 match, Rachel Gam and and Kristey Markle picked up their first win of 2016, defeating Sophie Flemion and Kortney Freeland in three sets (17-21, 21-6, 15-6).
Pinkney and Stork then made it two victories on the day as the CSUN duo easily handled Amanda Schoene and Katie Dunbar-Lowe 21-7, 21-10. In the extra match, Rachel Diaz and Kamden Maas picked up a 21-11, 21-14 win over Paige Gettman and Ally Barber.
CSUN continues its current road stretch next weekend (Mar. 25-26)Â as the Matadors travel to Tucson, AZ to take on New Mexico, Arizona State and the host Wildcats.
