Freshman Taylor Troost Tosses No-Hitter against Bengals
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (15-12) defeated Idaho State 8-0 in six innings and Loyola Marymount 5-2 Friday in its first games as part of the Mizuno Classic at Matador Diamond. Against the Bengals, freshman Taylor Troost tossed a no-hitter and Taylor Glover went 4-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs and her second home run of the season. In the win over the Lions, Tara Kliebenstein went 2-for-2 with a double and a two-run inside-the-park home run while Daphne Pofek went all seven innings and had four strikeouts in the victory.Â
Idaho State Recap
Rookie Taylor Troost (3-5) did not allow a hit over six innings of work to toss her first career no-hitter and the second by a CSUN pitcher since the 2008 season. She allowed just one runner to reach via error and issued a walk while adding a strikeout. She got 12 flyouts and eight groundouts in the victory and is 3-5 on the season with a 4.75 ERA in 53 innings of work.Â
Troost retired the side in order in each of the first three innings and then worked around a fielding error in the fourth. The Bengals went in order in the sixth and in the seventh, Troost quickly erased a lead-off walk with three groundouts.Â
At the plate, Taylor Glover tied a career high with four hits for the second time this season and fourth time in her career. She cranked a two-run home run in the bottom of the first and stole two bases in the victory. Savannah Horvath finished with 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a stolen base while Katie Hooper went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a stolen base.Â
Leading 2-0 in the bottom of the third, Glover singled and then moved to second on a throwing error. She then scored on an RBI single from Hooper and Karlie Habitz cleared the bases with her fifth home run of the season. Habitz has 17 RBIs and a .588 slugging percentage on the season.Â
In the fourth, CSUN scored a pair on a wild play. With runners on first and third, Horvath broke for second on the pitch and moved all the way to third as the ball went to the back stop. Maylynn Mitchell, who went 1-for-3 with a stolen base, scored on the play and the throw to third trying to get Horvath sailed into left field and the sophomore came home amidst the chaos.Â
Hooper added an RBI single in the sixth and with an RBI in the victory over LMU, moved into fifth in school history with 113 for her career.Â
LMU Recap
The Matadors overcame an early deficit and then added insurance runs late to beat the crosstown rival Lions. Daphne Pofek (7-4) scattered eight hits and two walks in a complete-game victory.Â
After giving up a solo home run in the first, Pofek was solid in the circle and came up with key outs in big situations. She left two runners on base in the third and then left them loaded after a fielder's choice ended the top of the fourth inning. LMU would get a run in the fifth to cut the deficit to 3-2, but Pofek retired six of the seven batters she faced in the sixth and seventh to earn the win.Â
At the plate, Tara Kliebenstein had a huge game for the Matadors. She started the third inning with a double to center and following a Savannah Horvath walk, scored on a two-run triple from Taylor Glover. Hooper then brought home Glover with an RBI single to give CSUN a 3-1 advantage.Â
With one out in the sixth, Maylynn Mitchell was hit by a pitch and Kliebenstein then cleared the bases with an inside-the-park home run to right center. The home run was her first of the season and second of her career.Â
Horvath finished with two steals in the victory and ended the day with a team-high 13. Sabrina Garcia had a stolen base in each victory Saturday and Mackenzie Babbitt also had a steal on the day.Â
Saturday, CSUN returns to action with a 4 p.m. contest against Yale. The Matadors will close out the tournament on Sunday with a 10 a.m game against Yale and a 12:30 p.m. contest with Idaho State. A complete weekend schedule can be found here.Â
