Defense Costs CSUN in Loss to Yale

Freshman Taylor Troost Extends Hitless Streak to 13.1 Innings
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (15-13) lost 6-2 to Yale Saturday afternoon as part of the Mizuno Classic at Matador Diamond. Savannah Horvath hit her team-leading seventh home run of the season and Taylor Troost tossed 3.2 innings of hitless relief, but six errors by six different players in the field cost the Matadors in the loss to the Bulldogs.Â
In the first-ever meeting between the two schools, Yale came out swinging. The first batter of the game went all the way to second on a throwing error and then scored on a RBI double. Although that batter was thrown out trying to extend the hit into a triple, a second fielding error allowed the Bulldogs to tack on another RBI double in the frame.Â
Yale tacked on another run off two hits in the second to chase CSUN starter Rebecca Bell (2-3) from the circle. She allowed four hits and three runs, though only one was earned, in an inning of work. Her replacement, Daphne Pofek, got CSUN out of the second without further damage, but  a pair of errors in the third allowed the Bulldogs to extend the lead to 4-0.Â
In the third, Haileigh Gonzalez led off the inning with a single and then trotted home on Horvath's two-run blast to left. She now has 16 RBIs on the season and has matched her total from last season with 31 runs scored.Â
Unfortunately, the Matadors would give the two runs right back to Yale. In the top of the fourth, the Bulldogs collected two of their five extra-base hits in the game to chase Pofek and force Troost into the contest. Pofek allowed three hits and two earned runs in 2.1 innings of work while Troost had five strikeotus in 3.1 innings of relief.Â
CSUN went in order in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and lead-off single from Sabrina Garcia was quickly erased by three quick outs in the seventh. Â Taylor Glover and Karlie Habitz had the other two hits for the Matadors. Terra Jerpbak (1-1) was tough in the circle for the Bulldogs in the complete-game victory.Â
The Matadors will get another crack at the Bulldogs Sunday morning as both teams wrap up play in the Mizuno Classic. CSUN and Yale will play at 10 a.m. and then be followed by a CSUN-Idaho State game at approximately 12:30 p.m.Â
