Matadors Drop Three Beach Matches in Arizona

NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN beach volleyball team battled but came away winless in three matches Friday and Saturday at the Wildcat Spring Challenge in Tucson, AZ.
The Matadors opened the two-day tournament Friday against Arizona State and fell 5-0 with two of the matches stretching to three sets.
Nicolette Pinkney and Nicoletta Stork came the closest to pulling out a win as the CSUN duo fell 16-14 in the No. 5 match to snap their two-match winning streak. After winning the opening set in thrilling fashion 26-24, the Sun Devil duo of Jordan Parnell and Mia Rivera claimed the final two sets 21-17, 16-14.
The Matadors also forced a third set at No. 4 as Erin Indermill and Aeryn Owens dropped a 15-11 decision in the decisive set. CSUN again won the opening set 21-16 before ASU's Logan Rae and Francis Grearaitis won set two 21-16 and the final set 15-11.
In the No. 1 match, Katie Sato and Lauren Conati fell 21-14, 21-9. At No. 2, Julie Haake and Maddie Leiphardt lost by the score of 21-17, 21-17 and CSUN's No. 3 team of Rachel Gam and Kristey Markle lost by the score of 21-18, 21-13.
CSUN did win the extra match as Nada Dragovic and Kamden Maas defeated Natalie Brown and Blair Robalin in three sets (19-21, 21-15, 16-14).
Also on Friday, the Matadors took one of the five matches against New Mexico State before falling 4-1.
Haake and Leiphardt picked up their first win of the season dominating the No. 2 match over Devanne Sours and Lise Rugland 21-11, 21-3.
Conati and Sato dropped a close first set at the No. 1 match 22-20 before dropping the second set 21-15. Gam and Markle lost 21-18, 21-18 at No. 3, Indermill and Owens fell 21-14, 21-15 at No. 4 and Pinkney and Stork dropped a 22-20, 21-13 decision at No. 5.
In the extra match, Dragovic and Maas dropped a tight three-setter 21-14, 16-21, 15-13.
On Saturday, the Matadors looked to salvage their final contest but came up empty against Arizona.
CSUN's lone victory came in the extra match as Indermill and Owens won by the score of 23-21, 21-9.
Haake and Leiphardt were back in the No. 1 match and fell to McKenna Witt and Madison Witt 21-15, 21-10. Conati and Sato lost 21-13, 21-15 at No. 2, Gam and Markle fell 21-10, 21-15 at No. 3, Dragovic and Maas lost 21-14, 21-15 at No. 4 and Pinkney and Stork fell 21-12, 21-16 at No. 5.
CSUN returns home for the first time in nearly a month Thursday (Mar. 31) as the Matadors host Concordia at 10 a.m. and Long Beach State at 2:30 p.m.
