CSUN Softball Faces CSU Bakersfield in Tuesday Doubleheader

Matadors Face the Roadrunners before Starting Big West Season
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (18-14) travels to Bakersfield for a doubleheader on Tuesday, Mar. 29 against CSU Bakersfield with game one slated for a 1 p.m. start. The Matadors will look to reach the 20-win plateau before the start of Big West play with a pair of games against the Roadrunners, its longtime rival on the diamond.Â

CSUN hits the road for the first time in several week with the two games in Kern County. The Matadors have just wrapped up a stretch where they played 16 of their last 17 games at Matador Diamond. In those contests, CSUN finished 10-6 and nearly pulled off upsets of ranked foes Florida State and Oregon State. In fact, the two games against the Roadrunners will be CSUN's first two true road games of the 2016 season.Â
At the plate, junior Taylor Glover continues to pace the Matadors with a league-best .491 batting average that ranks seventh among all NCAA Division I players as of Mar. 27. With her two RBIs against Illinois on Mar. 22, Glover became the ninth player in program history to amass 100 for her career and she is now tied for eighth in program history with 27 career doubles.Â
Senior Ariana Wassmer also has had a strong season at the plate. She is batting .313 with a career-high four home runs to go with 19 RBIs on the season. On Mar. 20, Wassmer had three RBIs in victories over Yale and Idaho State, matching a career high with the two performances.Â
Savannah Horvath also has had a strong season, batting .307 with a team-high 34 runs, 10 doubles, eight home runs and 13 stolen bases. As of Mar. 28, she leads the Big West in home runs and is tied for second, trailing only Glover, with 65 total bases on the season.Â
In the circle, freshman Taylor Troost enjoyed her time at Matador Diamond and has been a commanding presence for the Matadors. She tossed a six-inning no-hitter against Idaho State and added victories over Yale, Illinois and Idaho State again at the Mizuno Classic. As of Mar. 28, Troost ranks ninth in the Big West in ERA (3.56), sixth in opponent batting average (.249) and ninth in strikeouts (57).Â
Daphne Pofek has also enjoyed a strong season, carrying a 7-4 record into Tuesday's games. She picked up a complete-game victory over LMU at the Mizuno Classic and is tied for sixth in the Big West with the seven wins and ranks 10th with a .269 opponent batting average in 61.2 innings of work.Â
CSU Bakersfield enters Tuesday's game at 8-19 overall with a 0-1 mark at home after an 8-2 loss to Cal State Fullerton in its 2016 home opener on Mar. 23. As a team, the Roadrunners are batting .243 with 23 doubles, three home runs and 23 stolen bases on the season. CSUB also has three triples and has scored 71 runs in its 27 games this season.Â
In the circle, CSU Bakersfield sports a team ERA of 3.89 in 171 innings of work this season. Opponents have batted .281 off CSUB pitching this season, totaling 29 doubles and 18 home runs. In the field, the Roadrunners sport a .957 team fielding percentage with 34 errors in 27 games.Â
The Matadors and Roadrunners have already met once this season with CSUN prevailing on a pinch-hit, three-run home run from Katie Hooper. The two programs have faced each other 18 times in the programs' Division I era while CSUB posted wins over CSUN in the 1990 NCAA Division II National Championship game.Â
Following the games with CSUB, CSUN returns home to Matador Diamond to open Big West Conference Play. The Matadors will host the Long Beach State 49ers in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 2 and a single game on Sunday, April 3 with both days slated for a 1 p.m. start.Â
