Hooper's Homer Helps Lift CSUN Past CSU Bakersfield

Matadors Split Second Day of Stacy Winsberg Invitational
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (10-8) lost 12-3 to No. 12 Florida State and defeated CSU Bakersfield 5-3 Saturday in a pair of games at Matador Diamond as part of the Stacy Winsberg Invitational. The Matadors and Seminoles engaged in a close battled that Florida State was able to blow open with a pair of five-run innings late in the contest. Against the Roadrunners, Katie Hooper hit a pinch-hit, two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to lift the Matadors to a comeback victory over their regional rivals.Â
Against the Roadrunners, the Matadors fell behind 2-0 early in the contest. In the fourth, the Matadors tied the contest as Aliyah Ricks got an RBI after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Ariana Wassmer delivered an RBI single.
The Roadrunners quickly got the lead back in the top of the fifth before CSUN rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Wassmer picked up another RBI single and Hooper sent the first pitch she saw over the left-field fence to put the Matadors ahead for good.Â
Daphne Pofek (6-3) tossed three innings of relief work to earn the victory. She allowed four hits and one earned run to go with three strikeouts. Rebecca Bell started the game and allowed five hits and one earned run with two strikeouts. Â
Against the 12th-ranked Seminoles, CSUN fell behind 2-0 early on a pair of unearned runs. With the score still 2-0, CSUN scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. Haileigh Gonzalez scored on a wild pitch, Ricks delivered a pinch-hit RBI double and Savannah Horvath added a second double to score Ricks and give CSUN the lead.
That advantage would be short lived as Florida State would strike for five runs in both the sixth and seventh inning to take the victory.Â
Pofek (6-3) took the loss or CSUN in the circle against the Seminoles, allowing four earned runs over 5.2 innings of work. Taylor Troost and Katie Chenault also pitched in the contest.Â
Sunday, CSUN concludes its time in the tournament with a10:30 a.m. contest against No. 12 Florida State at UCLA's Easton Stadium and a  3 p.m. contest against Charleston Southern at Matador Diamond.Â
