Junior Rebecca Bell Tosses Complete Game for First Career Win
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- The CSUN Softball team (11-9)Â split its final day of the Stacy Winsberg Invitational, falling to No. 12 Florida State 10-0 in six innings before rallying to defeat Charleston Southern 4-3 Sunday afternoon. Junior Rebecca Bell tossed a complete game and held the Buccaneers to four hits and three runs to post her first career victory in the circle while sophomore Savannah Horvath blasted a two-run home run to lead the CSUN offense.Â
Bell (1-2), who missed all of the 2015 season, went all seven innings Sunday in the tournament finale and posted a pair of strikeouts. She has a 4.55 ERA in 40 innings of work this season and helped CSUN even the all-time series against Charleston Southern before another contest between the two schools on Tuesday, Mar. 8 at Matador Diamond at 2 p.m.Â
She ran into trouble in the top of the third, giving up all three of the Buccaneers' runs for the game. The lead was short lived as the Matador offense struck for four runs in the bottom half of the frame.Â
Selina Tajalle collected a one-out single and moved to second on an illegal pitch. She then came around to score on a single from Taylor Glover, who then scored on an RBI double from Katie Hooper. Horvath then cleared the bases with her third home run of the season.Â
For Hooper, the double was the 27th of her career and moves her into a tie for ninth in school history. Horvath added her team-leading ninth stolen base of the season and now has 23 for her career. Glover went 2-for-3 and is now batting .515 (34-for-66) and added her fourth stolen base of the season.Â
In their first game Sunday, the Matadors fell 10-0 in six innings to No. 12 Florida State at UCLA's Easton Stadium. CSUN managed six hits in the loss, but Florida State continued to flex its offensive muscle in the win.Â
Bell started the game and went 3.2 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs in taking the loss. Taylor Troost and Daphne Pofek also pitched in the defeat.Â
At the plate, six different Matadors recorded a hit: Glover, Horvath, Mackenzie Babbitt, Karlie Habitz and Tara Kliebenstein. Including both games Sunday, Glover is currently on a 16-game hitting streak while Habitz has a hit in four-straight contests.Â
After the Charleston Southern game Tuesday afternoon, the Matadors will host the Matador Classic from Thursday, Mar. 10 to Sunday, Mar. 13. A full tournament schedule for all games set to be played at Matador Diamond can be found here.
