Sophomore Savannah Horvath Hits 2 Home Runs in Victory
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (12-9) defeated Charleston Southern 7-3 Tuesday afternoon at Matador Diamond. Sophomore Savannah Horvath hit two home runs, Aliyah Ricks drove in a career-high three runs and Katie Chenault tossed six innings with seven strikeouts as the Matadors defeated the Buccaneers for the second time in three days.Â
After a quick top of the first, Horvath started a four-run Matador first inning by hitting the first pitch over the left field fence for her third home run of the season. Taylor Glover then added a single and a stolen base and scored on an RBI single from Katie Hooper. After Mackenzie Babbitt drew a walk, she and Hooper would score on a two-run single from Ricks.Â
The Buccaneers got a solo home run in the top of the second, but it amounted to their only hit of the afternoon.Â
In the fifth inning, Ricks picked up her career-high third RBI of the game on a single that scored Hooper. Horvath then added a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth that scored her and Selina Tajalle.Â
Although she ran into trouble in the seventh because of some free passes, Chenault (3-0) was tough in the circle for CSUN. She had a career-high five strikeouts and allowed just the one hit and five walks. She has a 5.43 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 19.1 innings of work this season.Â
Taylor Troost got the final out of the game to earn her first career save as a Matador.Â
Horvath finished with her first career multi-home run game and is now tied for the team lead with four on the year. She also stole her team-leading 10th base of the season and she tied a career high with the three RBIs.Â
Glover and Babbitt each had one stolen base and Hooper had a pair as CSUN totaled five in the victory. Glover extended her hitting streak to 17 games, matching the same streak she had as a freshman.
Hooper roped her 28th career double, taking sole possession of ninth in school history. Ricks finished 2-for-3 to go with the three RBIs and already has a career-high six on the season, four more than she totaled in her first two years. Â Maylynn Mitchell also had two hits and has a perfect fielding percentage in 48 chances this year.Â
CSUN hosts the Matador Classic this weekend from Mar. 10-13. The Matadors will face Grand Canyon, Toledo, No. 24 Oregon State twice and San Diego and a complete schedule can be found here.Â
