Four Matadors Collect Home Runs over Two Games with Gauchos
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (24-19, 4-4 Big West) split a Big West Conference doubleheader with UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon at Matador Diamond, winning game one 6-0 before dropping game two 6-1. Daphne Pofek tossed a three-hit shutout and Karlie Habitz, Savannah Horvath and Katie Hooper all homered in the game one victory while Taylor Nate's solo home run in the sixth was all CSUN could muster as it left 10 runners on base.Â
In game one, Pofek (11-5) was very tough against one of the top offenses in the conference. She scattered just three hits and two walks to post her first complete-game shutout of the season. She fanned seven Gauchos and faced 26 batters over the seven frames. She is now 11-5 with a 3.32 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 99 innings of work.Â
At the plate, Habitz, Horvath and Hooper all sent balls flying over the fence on a windy afternoon in the San Fernando Valley. Hooper got things started with an RBI single in the second and Habitz launched her sixth home run of the year in the third to give CSUN a 2-0 advantage.
In the fifth, Taylor Glover and Mackenzie Babbitt both reached and recorded stolen bases to put themselves in scoring position with no outs. Glover actually stole second and third in the inning to give her 16 stolen bases for the season and 63 for her career, tying her with New Mexico State's Abbie Sodaro for eighth in Big West Conference history.Â
Both walked home as Horvath blasted an 0-2 pitch over the fence in center for her team-leading ninth home run of the season. The three RBIs raised her season total to 21 and she leads the team with 20 extra-base hits on the season.Â
In the sixth, Hooper hit a solo home run to extend the CSUN lead to 6-0. The deep fly was her fifth of the season and 24th of her career, tying her with Jan Moshier for seventh in program history. She finished the game 3-for-3 with the two RBIs and a run scored.Â
Ashley Ludlow took the loss for UC Santa Barbara, allowing six runs in 5.1 innings of work.Â
The second game saw CSUN create opportunities, but fail to capitalize in key situations. The Matadors left 10 runners on base for the game, including seven over the first three innings.Â
For her part, Veronika Gulvin wiggled out of a few tough jams and got some early run support to defeat the Matadors. She worked around seven CSUN hits and four walks to earn the complete-game win.Â
At the plate, UCSB struck for a pair of runs on CSUN starter Katie Chenault (4-2) in the first inning on a two-out double. In the second, the Gauchos got four more runs and chased Chenault and Rebecca Bell from the circle before Taylor Troost was able to retire the side.Â
Chenault allowed two hits, three walks and four runs in 1.1 innings while Bell surrendered two runs and a walk without recording an out. For her part, Troost allowed just three hits and one walk over the final 5.2 innings of work and had three Ks.Â
Nate was the only Matador to touch the plate in game two, delivering a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. She added her first double of the year and was 2-for-2 with a walk in the loss.
Five other Matadors had hits, but none were able to produce a run as lead-off doubles from Nate in the second and Hooper in the fourth were wasted. Â Hooper's double was her ninth of the season and 32nd of her career, moving her into sole possession of fifth place in program history.Â
The two teams will battle for the series victory Sunday, April 17 at Matador Diamond with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. There will be $1 admission for all fans wearing pink. The first 50 fans with a game ticket receive will receive a free #MatadorsCare Pink Ribbon t-shirt and the first 200 fans with a game ticket will receive a free Cup of Menchie's of Granada Hills Frozen Yogurt.
