CSUN Posts 6-2 Victory over UCSB to Claim Series

Savannah Horvath hits three-run home run for second-straight day.
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (25-19, 5-4 Big West) defeated UC Santa Barbara 6-2 Sunday afternoon at Matador Diamond to clinch the Big West Conference series win. Junior Daphne Pofek tossed her second complete-game victory of the weekend and sophomore Savannah Horvath blasted a three-run home run for the second time over the weekend as the Matadors prevailed over the Gauchos to move into second place in the Big West Conference.Â
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third, Horvath launched a three-run home run to atone for two errors in the field. She continues to lead the Matadors in home runs, having now mashed a career-high 10 on the season. She also stole her team-leading 17th base of the season and her 31 career steals leaves her sole possession of eighth in program history.Â
Scoring on Horvath's home run were Taylor Glover and Mackenzie Babbitt. Glover recorded her ninth double of the season to start the inning and then moved to third a UCSB could not get an out on a fielder's choice to the pitcher. Glover's run scored was the 120th of her career, moving her past former All-American Scia Maumausolo for fifth in program history.Â
That would turn out to be enough for Pofek (12-5), who did not allow an earned run over the weekend. In the second, the CSUN defense behind her committed three errors and UC Santa Barbara was able to push three runs across the plate. Pofek also worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in which she got a strikeout looking and a groundout to third to end the threat.Â
Pofek scattered eight hits and one walk over the seven innings and finished with three strikeouts. She has done exceedingly well against Big West opposition thus far, sporting a 5-0 record with a 1.14 ERA in 37 innings of work.Â
In the fifth, the Matadors added three runs to further reinforce Pofek's work in the circle. Maylynn Mitchell started the inning with a bunt single and Babbitt singled to move her to second with one out. Sabrina Garcia came in to run for Mitchell and moved to third as Horvath drew a walk to load the bases. Karlie Habitz then blasted a ball up the middle for a two-run single and CSUN led 5-2. Horvath later stole third and scored on a throwing error on the play to conclude the game's scoring.Â
CSUN finished with four stolen bases in the victory as Babbitt added her 12th of the season and senior Madalyne Handy stole a career-high two bases. Tara Kliebenstein had two hits, including her fifth double of the season.Â
The Matadors return to action on Saturday, April 23 with a doubleheader at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
