CSUN Takes Two at Cal Poly to Claim Third Big West Series Win

Daphne Pofek Tisses Pair of Complete-Game Victories
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (27-19, 7-4 Big West) defeated Cal Poly 6-3 and 4-1 Saturday at Bob Janssen Field in a Big West Conference doubleheader. Junior Daphne Pofek tossed a pair of complete-game victories and Katie Hooper was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate as the Matadors claimed their first road series against the Mustangs since 2010.Â
Game One Recap
CSUN started game one quickly, scoring two runs in the top of the first off four hits. Mackenzie Babbitt started the game with a double and then quickly stole third. With one out, she scored on an RBI single from Savannah Horvath, who then stole second. She came around to score on an RBI single from Karlie Habitz.Â
The Matadors continued to swing a hot bat in the second. Katie Hooper started the inning with a single, but was caught stealing. With two outs, Babbitt drew a walk and then came around to score on an two-run home run from Taylor Glover. The home run was her fourth of the season and 16th of her career.Â
Cal Poly struck back for a pair of runs in its half of the second before Pofek could work out of the jam. The Mustangs got another run across in the fifth and in the sixth, Pofek allowed a lead-off single but retired the next three batters to end the frame.Â
In the top of the seventh, CSUN added an insurance run on a wild play in the outfield. With the bases loaded and no outs, Tara Kliebenstein lifted a fly ball into center field that was dropped by the Cal Poly fielder. The runner on third scored, but the runners on second and first were both forced out on the play when the throw came back into the infield.Â
Despite allowing three runs, Pofek (13-5) was solid in the complete-game victory. She had four Ks and improved to 6-0 against Big West opposition on the season.Â
Offensively, Hooper and Ariana Wassmer each had three hits in the victory while Habitz added two hits and scored a CSUN career-high two runs. Horvath stole her 18th base of the season, tying her with Jennifer Mosier for 10th in program history for a single season.Â
Game Two Recap
Pofek (14-5) continued her mastery in the circle, scattering one run and three hits in another complete-game performance. After giving up a solo home run in the second, she settled in and allowed just one hit over the next five innings of work.Â
She is now 7-0 with a 1.37 ERA in 51 innings against Big West opposition this season. For the year, she is 14-5 with a 2.97 ERA and 81 Ks in 120 innings of work.Â
Offensively, CSUN came back from that early 1-0 deficit behind some timely hitting. In the top of the third, Hooper started the inning with a double, her 10th of the season and 33rd of her career. A groundout moved her to third and she scored on an RBI single from Babbitt to tie the game.Â
In the fourth, CSUN took the lead on a Madison Fleming RBI fiielder's choice. A pair of singles and an intentional walk loaded the bases for Fleming, who blasted a ball to the shortstop that brought home Taylor Nate.Â
The Matadors added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. With one out, Glover reached on an error and then scored on an RBI triple from Horvath. Habitz then drove home Horvath with an RBI single.Â
Hooper and Horvath both had two hits in the victory and Horvath's two runs scored over the two games give her 42 for the season and ties her for 10th in program history in a single season.Â
The two teams will play the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m. at Bob Janssen Field.Â
