NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN beach volleyball team (3-11) came away with one win in three matches Saturday at the Santa Cruz Invitational.
The Matadors dropped their first two matches of the day but rebounded to top Cal Poly 4-1 in their final contest. CSUN lost its first two matches by the identical 4-1 scores to San Francisco and Santa Clara.
"We played three teams who are structured in a very similar way to us," said CSUN head coach Jeff Stork. "I'm proud of the way our pairs were battling until the end. We were right there in numerous sets and if we could have made one more play here and there, I think the outcome could have been different. This is the best volleyball I've seen our team play this season."
In winning four of the five pairs against Cal Poly, the Matadors picked up their third win of the season and second in the last three days.
CSUN dropped just two sets against the Mustangs as Julie Haake and Maddie Leiphardt won at No. 1, 21-19, 21-19. The win for Haake and Leiphardt was their fourth of the season. The Matadors' only loss came at No. 2 where Lauren Conati and Katie Sato fell 21-17, 21-19 to the Cal Poly duo of Raeann Griesen and Anna Gorman.

At No. 4, Nada Dragovic and Kamden Maas won for the fourth time this season earning a 22-20, 21-16 win. Aeryn Owens and Erin Indermill won for the second time on Saturday and fourth time of the season at No. 5, 21-18, 21-12. CSUN also claimed the extra match as Nicoletta Stork and Nicolette Pinkney won easily 21-12, 21-10.
Haake and Leiphardt picked up the Matadors' only win against Santa Clara in the middle session as CSUN won 21-15, 21-13. Stork and Pinkney again captured the extra match 21-15, 21-14 while the Matadors forced a pair of the other matches to three sets. Gam and Markle won the first set (21-17) but the Broncos won the final two sets 21-19, 15-9 to take the win at No. 3. In the No. 5 pair, Owens and Indermill came up just short in their bid for three Saturday wins falling by the score of 21-14, 19-21, 15-9. Â Â
