NORTHRIDGE, CA - On a rainy Saturday afternoon, the CSUN beach volleyball team posted a 5-0 win over visiting Colorado Mesa to pick up its fourth win of the season.
The Matadors (4-11) were stretched to three sets in the No. 3 and No. 5 matches but prevailed in each. All other contests went to CSUN in straight sets.
Julie Haake and Maddie Leiphardt picked up the Matadors' first win of the day as the CSUN duo defeated Hana Peterman and Naomi Pinnecoose 21-11, 21-18. After dropping their first five matches this season, Haake and Leiphardt have won six times in CSUN's last nine matches.
Rachel Gam and Kristey Markle made it two-for-two as they won handily at No. 4, 21-13, 21-11. The Matadors completed the first wave of matches winning the No. 6 extra match 21-9, 21-17 behind the solid play of Nicoletta Stork and Nicolette Pinkney.
CSUN clinched its fourth win as Lauren Conati and Katie Sato swept Taylor Woods and Erin Perez at No. 1, 22-20, 21-18. The win was the second this season for Conati and Sato at the No. 1 slot.
The final two matches of the day went the distance as Nada Dragovic and Kamden Maas battled back after dropping the first set to post a 19-21, 21-14, 15-10 at No. 5. Aeryn Owens and Erin Indermill then capped an undefeated day for the Matadors, winning at No. 3, 21-19, 17-21, 15-10.
"I'm proud of the way the team has been training the last few days," said CSUN head coach Jeff Stork. "The second half of our schedule features teams more similar to us and Colorado Mesa was one of those teams. It was a good test for us and we passed with flying colors. The matches that did go to three sets, I thought the pairs managed themselves very well and we came out with wins."
CSUN travels to Concordia next Thursday (Apr. 14) in one of its final tuneups before the inaugural Big West Championship.
