Daphne Pofek Finishes Weekend with 1.75 ERA in 20 Innings
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (27-20, 7-5 Big West) lost 1-0 to Cal Poly Sunday afternoon in the third and final game of a Big West Conference series at Bob Janssen Field. Junior Daphne Pofek worked out of multiple jams through five innings before a wild play resulted in the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth to lift the Mustangs to the victory.Â
Pofek (14-6) had a solid weekend as the Matadors won just their second Big West series in San Luis Obispo since the 2004 season. That continued Sunday despite the loss and she finished the weekend 2-1 with a 1.75 ERA and a.197 opponent batting average in 20 innings of work.Â
The only run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth. With a runner on first and one out, Pofek hit a batter to put two on base. The next batter blasted a ball to her left that glanced off her glove and that of shortstop Tara Kliebenstein. It rolled into left field and the runner from the second came all the away around to the plate.Â
In the first inning, Pofek had runners on second and third with no outs and got out of the jam with a fielder's choice, a runner caught stealing and a popout on the infield. In fact, CSUN catcher Karlie Habitz caught two runners stealing Sunday to give her nine for the season and a share of the lead in the Big West.Â
Unfortunately, CSUN could not muster a run to back up Pofek's performance in the circle. The Matadors had their chances, but timely hits and nature had other thoughts. In the third, CSUN loaded the bases with one out, but the next two batters could not produce a run.
One of those batters, Habitz, had a deep blast knocked down by a strong wind blowing into left field. Kliebenstein also had a ball get hung up in the gusts in left field and her drive fell helplessly into a glove on the warning track. Katie Hooper, who batted. 714 for the weekend, had a drive to left caught on the run and over the shoulder by a Mustang defender.Â
Taylor Glover and Mackenzie Babbitt had the only hits off Cal Poly's Sierra Hyland. She walked three and had three Ks in the win. Savannah Horvath stole her team-leading 19th base of the season in defeat.Â
CSUN returns to action next week with its final road Big West Conference series, three games at UC Riverside. The Matadors and Highlanders will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 30 and a single game on Sunday, May 1 with both days slated for a 1 p.m. start.Â
