CSUN Rallies to Win Game One, 11-1, and Posts 3-2 Win in Game Two
In game one, CSUN looked to be in trouble early. UC Riverside's Tayler Misfeldt did not allow a hit or a baserunner through the first 4.2 innings of work. Then with two outs in the fifth, Pofek launched her first career home run to tie the game at 1-1.Â
In the sixth, the Matadors tacked on a pair of insurance runs. With one out, Mackenzie Babbitt singled and moved to third on a double from Taylor Glover. Babbitt then scored on a sac fly from Savannah Horvath and Glover scored on an illegal pitch.Â
The Matadors added eight runs in the top of the seventh. Tara Kliebenstein started the inning with a single and then scored on an RBI triple from Katie Hooper. Maylynn Mitchell then put down a suicide squeeze to score Hooper and she went all the way to second on a throwing error on the play. Taylor Nate then ran for Mitchell, stole third base and scored on an RBI single from Glover.Â
After stealing second, Glover was able to walk home as Horvath blasted her team-leading 11th home run of the season over the fence in center field. With two outs in the inning, Ariana Wassmer and Pofek each drew walks and both scored on a three-run home run from Kliebenstein. Horvath's home run was the 20th of her career and moved her into a tie with Jaci Carlsen and Shannon Jones for ninth in program history.Â
Game two was a much tighter affair and came down to a wild seventh inning.Â
Tied 1-1 heading into the final frame, Horvath led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt from Karlie Habitz. Wassmer then drilled a ball that deflected off the third baseman to put runners on the corners. Helping her cause for hte second-straight game, Pofek ripped a ball to first base that could not be caught cleanly and although she was out on the play, Horvath came home to break the tie.Â
On the play, Sabrina Garcia, who was running for Wassmer, moved from first to third as a throwing error compounded the Highlanders' problems. Kliebenstein then ripped a single through the left side to give CSUN a 3-1 edge.Â
UCR would not go quietly in its half of the seventh. The Highlanders got a single to start the inning and a passed ball and throwing error put the runner on third with one out. The next batter singled sharply to make it 3-2 and put the pressure on Pofek, but the junior delivered a groundball to third and CSUN executed a double play to end the game.Â
Pofek allowed five hits and three walks, but had four strikeouts in the circle and two hits at the plate. Habitz caught her 10th runner trying to steal a base in the first to remain tied for the league lead.
In the first inning, CSUN struck for a run as Glover singled, stole second and then scored on a throwing error when Horvath dropped a bunt down to the pitcher. When all the dust settled Saturday, Glover moved into fourth in program history with 125 career runs scored, took sole possession of seventh with 214 career hits and tied Pacific's Gina Carbonatto for seventh in Big West Conference history with 65 career stolen bases.Â
The Matadors and Highlanders will meet in the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m. at Amy S. Harrison Field.Â
