Junior Daphne Pofek Goes 3-0 with 1.00 ERA in 21 Innings in Three Games
RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team(30-20, 10-5 Big West) defeated UC Riverside 2-0 Sunday afternoon in the third and final game of a Big West Conference series at Amy S. Harrison Field. Junior Daphne Pofek tossed a five-hit shutout to finish 3-0 over the three games with a 1.00 ERA in 21 innings of work while Savannah Horvath and Karlie Habitz collected RBIs in the seventh inning to help push CSUN to the series sweep.Â
At 10-5 in the Big West standings, CSUN sits in alone in second place and hosts league-leading Cal State Fullerton on Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7 for a three-game Big West series at Matador Diamond. The Titans are 13-2 overall and own a three-game lead on the Matadors headed into the series.Â
Sunday, the Matadors and Highlanders engaged in a tight contest that wasn't decided until the seventh inning. Pofek (17-6) scattered five hits and two walks to post her third win of the weekend. For the year, she is 17-6 with a 2.62 ERA and 90 Ks in 147 innings of work. Against Big West opponents, she is 10-1 with a 1.26 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 78 innings in the circle.Â
Pofek also got some great play from her battery mate, Habitz, who caught her 11th runner stealing for the season, recorded her second pick-off of the season and spoiled a suicide-squeeze attempt by the Highlanders. Â She added two hits at the plate and picked up a key RBI in the Matadors' two-run seventh.Â
Scoreless into the seventh, CSUN broke through with a pair of runs. Sabrina Garcia started the inning by reaching on a fielding error and moved to second on a bunt single from Mackenzie Babbitt. Taylor Glover dropped down a sac bunt to put the runners on second and third and bring Horvath to the plate.Â
Already with two hits, Horvath drove a ball to the shortstop who immediately fired home to cut down Garcia. Unfortunately, the UCR catcher thought it was a force play at the plate, touched home with her foot and did not tag Garcia before firing to first to try and get a double play. Habitz then blasted a single to left field to score Babbitt.
The win gives CSUN three-straight 30-win seasons, the first time the Matadors have accomplished the feat since 1997-1999. Â The Matadors have also swept their last four series with UC Riverside, having not lost to the Highlanders since 2012.Â
The Matadors and Titans will play a doubleheader on Friday, May 6 and a single game on Saturday, May 7 with both days slated for a 1 p.m. start.Â
