Ariana Wassmer Blasts Key 2-Run HR in Victory
HONOLULU, Hawai'i --- The CSUN softball team(22-16, 2-2 Big West) defeated Hawai'i 7-4 Friday evening in a Big West Conference game at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium in Honolulu. Junior Karlie Habitz had three hits, senior Ariana Wassmer blasted a key 2-run home run and junior Daphne Pofek tossed a complete game with six strikeouts to power the Matadors past the Rainbow Wahine in the series opener.Â
Trailing 4-2 after a Hawai'i grand slam in the bottom of the third, CSUN tied the game in the top of the fifth off the bat of Wassmer. She blasted her career-high sixth home run over the fence in left field to score her and Taylor Glover. Wassmer tied a career high with three RBIs for the fourth time and now has six home runs and 24 RBIs on the season.Â
The Matadors racked up 11 hits in the victory and were on the offensive from the first pitch of the game, which Savannah Horvath lined into center field for a single. She quickly stole second and moved to third as Glover reached on a fielding error. Glover then stole second and with one out, Habitz shot an 0-2 pitch through the left side of the infield to score Horvath. Wassmer than brought home Glover with an RBI groundout.Â
Other than a tough frame in the third, Pofek (9-4) was tough for CSUN. After the third, she allowed just one hit and one walk and retired the side in order twice. Pofek worked around six hits and two walks for the game and quickly closed the door on a Hawai'i rally in the seventh with a ground out to end the game.Â
In the top of the seventh, the Matadors added a pair of insurance runs. Habitz started the frame with a single and Taylor Nate entered the game as a pinch-runner. She stole second base and moved to third on a single from Wassmer. Madalyne Handy came in to run for Wassmer and moved to second on a ground out to the pitcher. Mackeznie Babbitt, who finished with two hits in the game, dribbled a ball up the first base line and after she was tagged out, the throw home to get Nate went wild and Handy also scored on the play.Â
In all, Wassmer, Horvath, Habitz and Babbitt all had multi-hit games for CSUN. The Matadors had four stolen bases with Glover recording the 61st of her career and Horvath stealing her team-leading 16th bag of the year.Â
The Matadors and Rainbow Wahine will play a doubleheader Saturday, April 9. First pitch of game one is slated for 2 p.m. (HT) / 5 p.m. (PT).Â
