Matadors Win Game One of Doubleheader 4-1
HONOLULU, Hawai'i --- The CSUN softball team(23-17, 3-3 Big West) split a Big West Conference doubleheader with Hawai'i Saturday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. In game one, Taylor Glover belted a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to back up a solid performance from Daphne Pofek in the circle as CSUN won 4-1 and claimed its second-straight series in Honolulu. In game three, thoughts of a series sweep went by the wayside as the Matadors left seven runners on base and the Rainbow Wahine offense collected nine hits.Â
Game one saw CSUN rally for the second time in as many days. Hawai'i jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly, but Pofek (10-4) was able to get out of the jam. She finished with her second complete-game victory of the weekend, scattering six hits to go with one strikeout.Â
In the top of the sixth, Savannah Horvath led off the inning with a single and then walked home as Glover belted an 0-1 pitch over the fence in center field to give CSUN a 2-1 edge. The home run was her third of the season, the 15th in her Matador career and she now has 27 RBIs on the season.Â
In the top of the seventh, CSUN added a pair of insurance runs. Mackenzie Babbitt reached on a two-base error and then stole third base with one out. She then scored on an RBI double by Maylynn Mitchell, who would then come around to score on a single from Horvath.Â
In the bottom of the seventh, Pofek gave up a pair of singles but the final out of the game was recorded at third base on one of the hits. She is now 10-4 with a 3.39 ERA, 56 Ks and a .254 opponent batting average in 86.2 innings of work this season.Â
Mitchell also had a sacrifice bunt and the stolen base was Babbitt's 10th of her rookie season.Â
In game two, the Matadors had some early chances but could not cash them in against a Hawai'i squad looking to avoid being swept at home.
Babbitt had two hits in the loss, collecting her third double of the season in the second inning.  She also had a single in the fourth and Taylor Nate added a hit in the next at-bat to put two on with one out, but the next two batters were retired.Â
Katie Hooper started the sixth inning with her first triple of the year, but the next three batters went in order without bringing her to the plate. Sabrina Garcia started the seventh with a single, but three-straight ground balls ended the game. Mitchell had the other CSUN hit in defeat.Â
In the circle, Taylor Troost (6-8) got through the first two innings unscathed, but gave up a pair of runs in the third. After giving up a third run in the fourth, she was lifted in the fifth for Katie Chenault. Troost finished with three strikeouts to go with three earned runs and seven hits allowed in four innings of work.
Chenault got into some trouble in the sixth, but a CSUN error compounded the problems and only one of the three runs in the frame was earned. She tossed two innings, allowing two hits but also fanning four Rainbow Wahine batters.Â
At 3-3 in the league standings, CSUN will return to the San Fernando Valley for its next Big West Conference series. The Matadors will host the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16 and a single game on Sunday, April 17 with both days slated for a 1 p.m. start.Â
