Matadors an Titans Play for Series Win Sunday at Noon
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (31-21, 11-6 Big West) defeated Cal State Fullerton 3-1 in the rain-suspened series opener before falling 6-1 in game two Saturday in a Big West Conference series at Matador Diamond. Savannah Horvath blasted a home run in each game, Karlie Habitz added a key solo home run in the game-one victory and Daphne Pofek picked up her 18th win of the season.Â
Sunday's series finale will determine the winner of the best-of-three Big West series and will play a prominent role in deciding the Big West Champion. The Matadors must win Sunday to keep their hopes alive for the league title as the Titans' magic number has shrunk to one, meaning Cal State Fullerton needs one more win or one more CSUN loss to win the conference.Â
Game one started Friday with a bang for CSUN. Mackenzie Babbitt led off the first with a bunt single and then came around to score on an RBI double by Taylor Glover. Later in the inning, Horvath launched a solo shot to give CSUN an early 2-0 advantage. That lead would hold up until rain came before the start of the fourth inning and play was suspended for the day.Â
Play resumed Saturday with another bang as the Titans cut the lead in half with a solo home run of their own. Habitz answered that shot with her seventh home run of the season to reestablish a two-run lead, 3-1. Habitz later caught a runner stealing, her 12th of the season.Â
In the circle, Pofek (18-6) allowed just four hits and two walks to go with two strikeouts. The seven-inning performance was her 15th complete game of the year and the win improved her conference record to 11-1 at the time. Desiree Ybarra took the loss for Cal State Fullerton.Â
Game two started with a third bang as the Titans connected on a two-run home run in the first to jump out to an early advantage against Pofek (18-7).
Cal State Fullerton added a run in the fifth to make it 3-0 before Horvath cranked her second home run of the series in the bottom of the fifth. She now has 13 home runs on the year, tying for fourth in program history for a single season, and claimed sole possession of ninth in program history with 22 career home runs.Â
The Titans added a two-out, three-run home run in the top of the seventh to cement the victory. Pofek took the  loss in the circle for just the third time since April 3 and allowed 10 hits with three strikeouts. Sydney Golden earned the win for Cal State Fullerton. Â
Horvath added her 11th double of the season to tie Glover for the team lead while seven other Matadors had a hit. Habitz caught another run trying to steal, increasing her season total to 13.Â
