CSUN Drops Series Finale to Cal State Fullerton

Matadors Host UC Davis Aggies May 13-14 Matador Diamond
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (31-22, 11-7 Big West) lost 2-0 to Cal State Fullerton Sunday afternoon in the finale of a Big West Conference series at Matador Diamond. Desiree Ybarra stymied Matador batters all day and allowed just three hits in a complete-game shutout that clinched for the Titans the 2016 Big West Conference Championship.Â
Needing a win Sunday to stay alive in the hunt for a second-straight Big West title, the Matadors ran into a determined performance from Ybarra (14-6). The senior did not allow a hit until the fifth inning and that came with two outs. She then worked around singles in the sixth and the seventh and added six strikeouts and walked one in the victory.Â
CSUN starter Daphne Pofek (18-8) gave an admirable effort, allowing two hits and a solo home run in three innings of work. Taylor Troost tossed the final four innings, giving up five hits and one run.Â
The Matadors got hits from Karlie Habitz, Sabrina Garcia and Madison Fleming, but could not produce a run. Katie Hooper drew her team-leading 17th walk and Taylor Nate stole her 11th base of the season and 30th of her career to move into a tie for ninth in program history.Â
The Matadors close out the 2016 regular season with a three-game Big West series against UC Davis on May 13-14. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday, May 13 and a single game on Saturday, May 14 with both days slated for a 1 p.m. start. Before Saturday's home finale, the CSUN softball program will honor its four seniors participating in their final game at Matador Diamond: Madalyne Handy, Allison Lacey, Maylynn Mitchell and Ariana Wassmer.Â
