NORTHRIDGE, CA ---
The CSUN's men's soccer team unveiled its 2016 schedule, head coach Terry Davila announced. The Matadors have nine home matches at Matador Soccer Field and will play a total of 18 matches in the 2016 regular season, facing four opponents and playing five matches against squads that participated in the 2015 NCAA Tournament.
"We have put together a non-conference schedule that is full of several types of styles in several of the top leagues throughout the nation," Davila said. "We hope to use the strength of our non-conference schedule to push us as we enter Big West Conference play."
CSUN opens the 2016 season with a pair of home exhibition matches. On Sunday, August 14, the Matadors host California and then on Sunday, August 21, the Matadors take on San Diego State with both matches slated for a 7 p.m. start at Matador Soccer Field. (Editor's note: the original story said Saturday, Aug. 14 and 21, which was incorrect. Both games are on a Sunday. We apologize for this error.)
The 2016 regular season opener is at home against Tulsa at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26 and will feature a Youth Night promotion where children age 13 & younger wearing a team jersey or t-shirt receive free admission with a purchased adult ticket.
In September, CSUN hits the road for six of its eight matches and five-straight contests to start the month. The Matadors open September in Albuquerque as part of a tournament at New Mexico. CSUN will take on the host Lobos and Air Force on Friday, Sept. 2 and Sunday, Sept. 4, respectively.
The second weekend in September sends CSUN to Edwardsville, IL to face Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Friday, Sept. 9. Three days later, CSUN returns to California to take on UCLA at Drake Stadium on Monday, Sept. 12.
The roadtrip wraps up with a triple to Orem, UT to face the Utah Valley Wolverines on Saturday, Sept. 17.
CSUN returns to Matador Soccer Field on Thursday, Sept. 22 with a meeting against the University of San Diego at 7 p.m. The Matadors will feature a Spirit Night Fan Fair before the match with free pregame food, music and giveways in the parking lot directly adjacent to Matador Soccer Field.
After facing the Toreros, CSUN hits the road one final time in non-conference play with a contest at CSU Bakersfield on Sunday, Sept. 25.
Big West Conference play opens on Thursday, Sept. 29 with a home contest against UC Davis. The contest is a rematch of a 2015 Big West Conference Tournament Quarterfinal in which UC Davis narrowly prevailed 2-1 in overtime.
CSUN closes out the first weekend of conference action with a home meeting against Sacramento State on Saturday, Oct. 1. The Matadors conclude their schedule against the Big West North Division with road matches at Cal Poly (Thursday, Oct. 6) and UC Santa Barbara (Saturday, Oct. 8).
The Matadors close out the month of October with six matches against their rivals in the Big West South Division. CSUN starts intra-division play by hosting defending league champion Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, Oct. 12.
CSUN then hits the road for contests at UC Irvine (Saturday, Oct. 15) and UC Riverside (Wednesday, Oct. 19) before returning to Matador Soccer Field for two of its final three matches of the 2016 regular season.
On Saturday, Oct. 22, CSUN meets up with UC Irvine and then hosts UC Riverside on Saturday, Oct. 29 for Senior Night. Sandwiched between those two contests is CSUN's final road match of the regular season, a contest at Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, Oct. 26.
The Matadors return a total of 19 players and 17 letterwinners in 2016, including Shane Steffes, CSUN's Big West Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and Patrick Hickman, a two-time All-Big West selection on defense. Among offensive players, Dean Wright is the team's top returning point producer from 2015, having totaled two goals, four assists and eight points in his first season with the club. Junior Papi Diouf, who scored his two goals on the season over the last three matches, returns as well as Jeremy Degraffenreidt, Juan Fernando Samayoa and Nicolas Camacho.
The 2016 season will be Terry Davila's 18th at the helm of the Matadors. Earlier this spring, the Matadors announced a recruiting class of nine incoming student-athletes. The class has an international feel and is comprised of student-athletes from Ukraine, Australia and Israel as well as the United States.
