Matadors Hold Off Oral Roberts For Second Consecutive Win

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team picked up its second straight victory Sunday night, defeating the Oral Roberts University Golden Eagles, 1-0 at Matador Soccer Field. Kayvon Monfared scored the game's lone goal in the 22nd minute, while Dorian Drucks made two saves to record his second win and first shutout of the season. The victory moves the Matadors to 2-1-0 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN controlled the possession for much of the first half, winning 50-50 balls and making the right tackles when necessary. The Matadors outshot the Golden Eagles 12-0 and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Matadors broke through in the 21st minute when Messiah Antwi delivered a throw-in from near the left corner into the box, where Monfared headed the ball home from 10 yards for his third goal of the season and third goal in two games.

Monfared finished with two shots on target, both coming in the opening half, while Antwi added a shot on target and picked up the assist on the game-winning goal.

The Golden Eagles came out firing right after the halftime break. ORU generated more pressure after halftime, putting both of their shots on target in the second half. Drucks turned away attempts by Emre Aydin in the 46th minute and Baptiste Lechuer in the 49th minute to preserve the Matadors' advantage.

The second half provided much more physicality as the Golden Eagles put extra emphasis on keeping the ball away from their side of the field, but the Matador defense was staunch and thus prevented the attack from generating more than two shots on goal the entire game.

In the game's final moments, the away team had one last gasp as it tried to score on the Matadors, but CSUN didn't allow even a single shot in what turned out to be desperation mode for ORU.

CSUN outshot ORU 15-2.
It was the first career assist for Messiah Antwi.
It is the ninth career shutout for Dorian Drucks who had two saves as well.
CSUN has now defeated Oral Roberts in back-to-back years.
This is the 229th career win for head coach Terry Davila.

ON DEFENSE
"You've got to build your foundation on something sturdy, and defense is something that's sturdy. It was a team collective effort defensively. We gave up only two shots. We created 12 shots in the first half, too. We should have put some away. We had some chances to put them away, but we kept them around, and they made it a game late. That's soccer. If you don't put them away, they can hang around and make it a tough, competitive game, which they did."

ON MONFARED'S GOAL
"Always, a goal is good. It was an important phase of the game, and while you're learning how to get your offense together, we're creating opportunities and shots, so that's a good thing. But we still have to start putting the ball in the back of the net, so we still have a lot of work to do on the training pitch. But at least it's a team goal."

CSUN returns home for another non-conference showdown, this time against Houston Christian. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Sep. 4 as the Matadors look to win three in a row.
