NORTHRIDGE, CA---
CSUN Women's Soccer (2-1-1) broke open a scoreless game with four second half goals en route to 4-0 shutout win against South Dakota (1-2-1) on Sunday afternoon at Matador Soccer Field. Lindsay Kutscher recorded a brace and fellow defender Briana Geffre registered her first career goal in the victory. Forward Cynthia Sanchez netted her 15th career goal in the contest, moving her into a fifth place tie with Lelia Pate (2002-05) on the school's all-time career goal list. Sanchez, Camille Watson, Marissa Favela, Tiffany Guerra and Sylvia Trinh all had assists in the match while Kourtney Kutscher assisted her sister Lindsay for a score in the 54th minute.Â
"I think all four of our goals were excellent today," said head coach Keith West. "We could have had a couple more [goals] in different areas but the one thing as a coach is that you have to make sure you are creating them. We created some great opportunities today. I told them at halftime that when the first one comes, they are going to come in bunches so be ready."
Less than 48 hours after the Matadors fell 1-0 to North Dakota State, CSUN bounced back with a four-goal victory thanks to a flurry of goals after halftime. In a game that took the shape of Friday's contest early on, the Matadors outshot their open by a wide margin for the second-straight contest. Despite holding an 18-2 advantage in shot attempts, CSUN entered intermission deadlocked with the Coyotes at 0-0.Â
The Matadors posted seven shots on goal in the first half with both Watson and Favela recording two. In the 22nd minute, Sanchez also had a look at the net with a running drive down the left side of the box but her shot intended for the back post was batted out by goalkeeper Parker Rytz. Minutes later, the Matadors received three-straight shots following a corner kick as Trinh had two shots blocked and Favela headed a shot that was stopped by Rytz.
The Matadors' persistence on the offensive end would pay off in the 53rd minute. After a South Dakota turnover, Sanchez out ran her defender down the right sideline and made her way to the net. Following a play to the goal that forced goalkeeper Sydney Hardin out of her post momentarily, Sanchez delivered a short cross to Kutscher who drove in the game's first goal from 10 yards out.Â
The Kutscher sisters, Kourtney and Lindsay, teamed up to add to the Matadors' lead just 95 seconds later. In a similar play to CSUN's first goal, Kourtney feeded Lindsay with a short pass near the left of the box. Kutscher quickly headed in the pass out of the reach of Hardin.Â
The Matadors continued to press on the offensive end for the remainder of the afternoon. In the 62nd minute, CSUN once again lit up the scoreboard after a series of well excuted passes. Utilizing quick touches from Watson and Favela, Sanchez netted her first goal of the season with a shot from the right of the box.Â
Goalkeeper Jovani McCaskill made two saves in the first half and kept the Coyotes off the scoreboard in the second half with strong play in net. In one of the closest calls of the day, McCaskill left her post and batted away a shot from Corey Strang near the top of the box in the 61st minute. McCaskill earned her fourth save of the match at the 79:11 mark, keeping South Dakota scoreless.
CSUN added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute off a header from Geffre. After sweeping passes from Guerra and Trinh across the box, Geffre found the net from 10 yards out giving the Matadors a 4-0 edge.Â
The Matadors defense maintained the shutout over the final minutes. After a USD shot at the 62:42 mark of the game, the Matadors held the Coyotes to one shot the rest of the way. Senior center back Nicole Thompson played the full 90:00 for the fourth straight match on Sunday while Amanda Martin logged 74 minutes on the backline.Â
A member of the Big West Conference All-Freshman Team in 2015, Kutscher recorded her first career brace on Sunday and she matched her two goals she posted last season. Fellow outside back, Geffre hit the net for the first time in 36 career matches with CSUN.Â
Junior goalkeeper Jenna Koziol made her Matador debut late in the second half, taking over for McCaskill in the 87th minute while sophomores Michaela Giordano, Tiffany Guerra and Amber Edemann also made their respective first appearances in a CSUN uniform.Â
The Matadors conclude their homestand next Friday with a 7 p.m. match against Ball State at Matador Soccer Field.Â
