The Matadors split their first two home matches of the 2016 season last weekend. In their home opener, the Matadors fell to North Dakota State, 1-0, on Friday but cruised to a 4-0 victory over South Dakota on Sunday afternoon.Â
Despite outshooting the Bison, 16-3, in the match including 11-2 in the second period, the Matadors surrendered the deciding goal in the 59th minute in their loss to NDSU. CSUN also held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks and edged the Bison in shots on goal, 3-2. Senior Breanna McCallum led the team in shots with five off the bench.
CSUN bounced back with a four-goal victory versus the Coyotes, receiving three goals from its backline. After a scoreless first half, sophomore Lindsay Kutscher recorded her first career brace, scoring twice within a 95 second span. Junior forward Cynthia Sanchez netted her first goal of the season to give her team a 3-0 lead and senior defender Briana Geffre connected on an insurance goal in the 82nd minute. Geffre's score in the second half was her first of her Matador career. In net, junior goalkeepers Jovani McCaskill and Jenna Koziol combined to shut out USD while McCaskill tallied four saves in the match.Â
After her two goals on Sunday, Kutscher leads the team in scoring while Sanchez, Geffre, Sylvia Trinh and Camille Watson all have a goal apiece. Seven Matadors have registered assists thus far in 2016 including Watson, Sanchez, Trinh, Marissa Favela, Kourtney Kutscher, Taylor Hobson and Tiffany Guerra. In the shot category, Watson leads CSUN with 13 and Sanchez is second with 10. Out of her 10 shot attempts, Sanchez has put nine on goal for a team-best .900 shot on goal percentage.Â
McCaskill has amassed over 376 minutes in net for CSUN, allowing two goals in four matches. Already the current Matador leader in career goals-against-average, McCaskill holds a 0.48 GAA on the season to go along with 15 saves.Â
With her score on Sunday, Sanchez moved into the top five in CSUN's all-time scoring list. Connecting on her 15th career goal last weekend, Sanchez tied Leila Pate (2002-05) for fifth-place in goals and moved to within two scores of catching Brianna Monka (2004-05) for fourth in the Matador record books. Sanchez is also closing in on seventh-place in the career points list, also occupied by Pate, with her 34 points as she needs three to slip into seventh.Â
CSUN's matchup with Ball State will be the first ever meeting between the two programs. Facing Mid-American Conference teams, the Matadors are 0-1-1 in team history as CSUN has faced Kent State (2009) and Toledo (2014) in previous seasons.
San Diego holds a 10-3 advantage in the all-time series with the Matadors including a 7-1 record at home. Last September, CSUN fell at San Diego, 4-1. The Matadors only victory at Torero Stadium came in a 3-0 win during the 2012 season.Â
