CSUN Women's Soccer (3-1-4) travels to Milwaukee, WI, to participate in the Marquette Invitational beginning Friday afternoon. The Matadors face Loyola-Chicago on day one of the invitational at 2:30 p.m. (PT) and will square off with host Marquette on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. (PT). Live stats will be available for both matches and Marquette will provide a live video stream of Sunday's contest.Â
The Matadors head into the Marquette Invitational undefeated in their last five matches after playing to a pair of draws over the weekend. CSUN battled San Jose State to a 0-0 decision on Friday evening and again played to a scoreless 110 minutes against nationally ranked Pepperdine two nights later.
On Friday, the Matadors outshot San Jose State, 13-12, but were unable to punch home the deciding goal. Junior Jovani McCaskill posted six saves in net while the CSUN defense held the Spartans without a shot over the last 11:16 of the match. Playing in their third-straight overtime game 48 hours later, the Matadors were again led by their defense versus Pepperdine as the team shutout its fifth-straight opponent. McCaskill once again performed well in net, saving six shots to record her fifth clean sheet of the season.Â
For her efforts over the weekend, McCaskill earned Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time in her career. McCaskill last received the weekly honor during the 2014 season. Limited to three matches in 2015 due to injury, McCaskill has returned to the Matadors in a big way, recording an impressive 0.23 goals-against-average to go along with 32 saves and a .941 save percentage in 796:48 in goal. The league leader in shutouts, McCaskill is also fourth in the nation with her five shutouts as of Sept. 13. She is also in the Top 10 in the NCAA in goalie minutes played (sixth), save percentage (seventh) and GAA (ninth).
As a unit, the Matadors earned their fifth consecutive shutout on Sunday, matching the feat accomplished only by the 2001 and 2012 teams. Playing in three-straight scoreless draws, CSUN has not allowed a goal for the last 541:15 on the field. The Matadors are tied with UC Santa Barbara for the fewest goals allowed in the Big West with two. Both teams are also tied for the conference lead with six team shutouts. CSUN is ninth in the NCAA in shutout percentage (.750) as of Sept. 13.
On the backline, senior defender Nicole Thompson has played every minute (800) for the Matadors this season while sophomore Lindsay Kutscher has amassed 776 minutes on the field. Freshman Amanda Martin and sophomore Christina Nixon have also seen significant time on the pitch, posting 604 and 591 minutes respectively.Â
Lookig to snap a three-match scoreless streak, the Matadors are led by Kutscher in the goal department with two. Seniors Camille Watson, Sylvia Trinh and Briana Geffre, junior Cynthia Sanchez and freshman Bethany Fitzsimmons have also hit the net this season. Watson leads the team in shots with 25 with 10 on goal while Sanchez and Taylor Hobson have 14 shots apiece.Â
After earning a 0-0 draw at San Diego on Sept. 4 and playing to scoreless ties against San Jose State and Pepperdine, the Matadors have competed in three-straight 0-0 matches for the first time in program history. The team has also matched the 2000 team for the most 0-0 decisions in a single season and for playing to the most draws consecutively. With four ties already this season, the Matadors are two short from matching the 2012 team's program record of six ties.Â
CSUN has only faced Loyola-Chicago once in team history. The teams faced during the 2005 season in a neutral-site contest as the Matadors earned a 7-1 decision. Outside of Loyola-Chicago, the Matadors have not met any other team in the Missouri Valley Conference. CSUN has never squared off with Marquette and has only faced one team (Creighton) from the Big East Conference in team history.Â
