Matadors Can't Contain Ninth-Ranked BYU in 3-0 Loss

NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN Matadors knew they had a tall task ahead of them Friday at Smith Fiedhouse in Provo, Utah. Not only was CSUN taking on the ninth-ranked team in the country but BYU came in 55-2 on its home court since the 2011 season.
The score proved true to form as the Cougars swept the Matadors 25-15, 25-16, 25-11.
CSUN (3-7) didn't help itself offensively, hitting -.051 (20-24-79) as a team. But the Matadors did put up a strong block throughout the match, recording 7.0 team blocks.
Junior Rachel Diaz and senior Julie Haake each had five kills to lead CSUN, Diaz hitting .143 on 14 swings. In terms of hitting percentage, junior setter Lauren Conati led the Matadors at .250 with two kills to go with 14 assists and five digs. Conati and Melissa Eaglin both had solo blocks while Diaz had a team-high four block assists.
The Matadors got off to a quick start in the opening set, leading 4-1 without the benefit of a kill. CSUN still led 6-4 when the hosts put together a 10-1 run to take an insurmountable 14-7 lead. Neither team hit well in the first set as BYU went on to win 25-15 despite hitting .129. The Matadors had just five kills on -.207 hitting.
CSUN trailed 4-3 early in set two when the Cougars opened up a 12-5 following an 8-2 run. A Cougar service error kept the Matadors in it at 14-10 but BYU closed the frame on an 11-6 run to win going away 25-16.
The final set was all BYU as the Cougars hit .367 to CSUN's -.042.
Amy Boswell led BYU (10-1) with a match-high 15 kills, hitting .882 on 17 attacks.
The Matadors continue their Utah trip Saturday as CSUN plays UNLV in Provo at 9 a.m.before traveling to Orem to take on Utah Valley at 4 p.m.
