CSUN Women's Soccer (4-2-4) closes out non-conference play against Omaha at Matador Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon at 11:30 a.m. Live stats will be provided for the matchup. Reaching the halfway mark of the season, the Matadors' two losses through their first 10 games are the fewest to begin a season since the 2005 campaign. Following Sunday's match, the Matadors will begin Big West Conference play on Friday, Sept. 30 against UC Davis at home.Â
The Matadors return home after splitting their two matches at the Marquette Invitational in Milwaukee, WI, last weekend. CSUN opened up the invitational with a 2-0 win over Loyola-Chicago but fell 3-2 to Marquette on Sunday. Following the Matadors' final match of the weekend, the senior trio of Nicole Thompson, Taylor Hobson and Kourtney Kutscher all received All-Marquette Invitational Team honors.Â
On Friday, CSUN broke open a scoreless game with a pair of second half goals to win 2-0. Kutscher netted her first goal of the season and Justine Silvers collected her first career goal to lead CSUN. The defense held the Ramblers to only six shots and goalkeeper Jovani McCaskill recorded her sixth shutout of 2016. Two days later, the Matadors fell into an early hole against Marquette, surrendering two goals in the first 11:03 of the match. Trailing 2-0 at the half, CSUN would rally as Kutscher and Camille Watson tallied goals to even the game at 2-2. The two teams battled back-and-forth the rest of the way but Marquette received a timely goal in the 84th minute to post the 3-2 win.Â
After being held scoreless over three-straight matches, the Matadors broke out and scored five goals in two games in Milwaukee. Sisters Kourtney and Lindsay Kutscher along with Watson lead the team in scoring with two goals apiece while Sylvia Trinh is posting a team-leading three assists after picking up a helper on Friday. Watson leads the Matadors in points with six and in shots with 31.Â
Tying last season's shutout mark, the Matadors registered their seventh shutout of 2016 on Friday afternoon. The team also posted their sixth consecutive shutout against Loyola-Chicago, setting a new program record. Although the scoreless streak came to an end on Sunday, CSUN held opponents without a goal for over 635 minutes during the string. As a team, the Matadors are tops in the Big West Conference in goals against average (.459) and shutout percentage (.700). Leading the conference in goalie minutes played (976:48) and shutouts (6), McCaskill is in the Top 10 nationally in both categories as she is third in minutes in goal and fifth in clean sheets as of Sept. 21.Â
McCaskill continues to move up the Matadors' all-time career Top 10 in several categories. Already the school leader in all-time GAA with 0.72, McCakill is now in a three-way tie for fifth place with Karen Comstock (2002-05) and Tawni Takagi (1996-99) with 12 wins. Third in career shutouts with 13, McCaskill is also seventh in minutes in goal (2,510) and eighth in saves (105).Â
With eight career goals, Kutscher is now three goals away from reaching the Matadors' all-time Top 10 scoring list. Watson is nearing the Top 10 assist list with her eight in her career as she is two away from the 10th spot.Â
The Matadors have never faced Omaha in program history. Coming in without only one meeting against teams from the Summit League (Denver), the Matadors have already squared off with two teams from the conference this season. CSUN fell to the Summit League's North Dakota State, 1-0, on Aug. 26 but bounced back to defeat South Dakota on Aug. 28, 4-0.Â
A Closer Look at Omaha
The Mavericks come into Sunday's matchup with an overall record of 2-5-2 including an 0-2-1 mark on the road. In last week's action, Omaha dropped a 3-0 decision at Northern Colorado on Friday and played to a 1-1 draw against Colorado State on Sunday. Currently, the team is on a four-match road trip, which continues at Loyola Marymount this Friday and concludes at CSUN.Â
Junior Carlie Cook leads the way for the Mavericks, netting a team-high four goals and 10 points. Sophomore Izzy Anders has two goals while junior Lydia Holtmann and senior Ava Doetsch have also hit the net. In goal, senior Haley Shelton has started six of the team's 10 matches this season, amassing 558:58 on the field. Shelton has posted a 1.29 GAA on the season along with 39 saves, a .830 save percentage and two shutouts. As a team, Omaha has allowed the second-fewest goals in the Summit League with 12.Â
