SANTA BARBARA, CA - Arvis Greene and Dimitar Kalchev combined for 28 kills as the 14th-ranked CSUN Matadors completed an unbeaten weekend at the UCSB Asics/South Coast Inn-vitational with a 25-12, 25-19, 25-19 victory over Mount Olive Saturday at Rob Gym.
CSUN (5-0) finished 3-0 in UCSB's annual tournament for the second straight season, after defeating Quincy (3-0) and Fort Wayne (3-1) on Friday.
"We played really well in set one but today we we're steady throughout the entire the match," said CSUN head coach Jeff Campbell. "We still have some things to work on but overall I thought we played well here. We got three important wins and faced some adversity, so this is a good springboard for conference play next week."Â
Kalchev was nearly unstoppable the entire tournament but it was Greene who turned in a spectacular effort on Saturday. The junior opposite pounded 15 kills on a career-best .778 hitting with just one hitting error in 18 attacks. He also added four blocks and a pair of digs. Kalchev, hitting .571 through four matches, added 13 kills (.364) and two aces to up his team-leading total to 12.
Sophomore setter Sam Porter had 30 assists as the Matadors hit over .400 as a team for the third time in five matches. CSUN hit .517 (39-8-60) against the Trojans, its best since hitting a school record .661 against UC Merced just three days ago.
The Matadors broke open set one midway through as CSUN boosted a four-point lead to nine (20-11) following a Jakub Ciesla kill. Committing just a single hitting error in the opening frame, the Matadors, who hit .684, cruised home with the 25-12 win in set one.
Greene then found his offensive groove in set two as he and Kalchev continually put away kills giving the Matadors a two-set lead following the 25-19 win. Greene had 11 kills on 12 errorless swings at the end of the second set.
CSUN then closed the match by the identical 25-19 score as Greene added four more kills in the third set, the Matadors hitting .444.
Bret Rutledge led Mount Olive (0-3) with 10 kills on .261 hitting. The Trojans wound up hitting .159 as a team.
CSUNÂ opens MPSF play next week with road matches at Cal Baptist (Jan. 11) and USC (Jan. 14).
